if some foreign country were to invade, everyone should have a gun.

The US has, by far, the highest military budget in the world, with plenty of voluntary enlists to provide more than enough soldiers to defend it. Arming it's citizens to assist in war simply isn't necessary.

Right, cuz a loving assault rifle is going to stop, say, an aircraft. And god help us if you think everyone should be armed with loving guided missile launchers

A citizen does not need an assault rifle but he may damn well have it if he's never broken the law before and has a good mental history.
