Author Topic: Crypt of the NecroDancer - Deliver beatdowns to the beat  (Read 3901 times)

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a hardcore roguelike rhythm game. Everything in the randomly generated dungeons moves to the beat of the game's incredible soundtrack, composed by Danny B (most well-known for his work in Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac). You can also set your own custom tracks from your music library if you choose, and keep up with your keyboard, controller, or even a USB dance pad. Miss a beat however and you miss your turn...and that could mean your death. Don't dawdle; the level only lasts as long as the song! Pick up a multitude of items with different effects and wield various weapons with varying attack patterns. Collect diamonds to unlock helpful upgrades like heart containers and new items to appear in the dungeon or cast them all aside with Hardcore Mode. While the game is in Early Access, there's no shortage of content! A multitude of characters are planned with several already making an appearance. Because of the nature of the game it's much better to see and hear what it's all about rather than me rambling on about it!

A genre I like mixed with a genre I don't like.

Help.

Is the only rhythm-game aspect that all inputs are/should be delivered to a steady beat for the whole level?

You also get increasing buffs the longer you stay on-rhythm.

The graphics feel powerful (oddly enough), and the rhythm mechanics are a surprisingly good excuse to have Lapua Magnum-caliber jams from DB himself in the game.

I suppose, though I'm not sure what other aspects there could be

It sounds monotonous when you put it like that but the beat is so fast-paced that you have to think very quickly and try to remember each monster's movement pattern so you don't end up hopping to the same square they do

Like Cybertails said there's also a coin multiplier that you get to keep as long as you stick to the rhythm

I didn't mean to make it sound monotonous, but rather was just wondering how far into the rhythm game genre they travelled. It just doesn't really feel like a true rhythm game hybrid with how constant that side of it is. However, the music is great and the roguelike side of it looks solid, so I'll probably give it a try some day.

reg made it sound shallow - there isn't just a $$$ multiplier, you literally get more powerfyl the longer and/or better you groove it up.

...i haven't even played the game don't look at me like that

That's only true if you have Obsidian items, otherwise it's just the coin multiplier

The vocals are amazing lol

I managed to unlock a character

the unlocking in this game is so random

i want a new character

A way in?

There's no such thing as a way in.

(ironically that's a bomb spell but it doesn't seem to want to refresh)

edit: it's as if the game doesn't want me to win it

the refresh number for spells is how many more monsters you need to kill
it doesnt work with time or movement

is zone 3 even possible

because its insane
