They never said this. They said you had to pay for the authoring tools to make mods.

OT: Tribes 2. It came out 14 years ago and the company that made it went bankrupt. Despite nobody playing it anymore, it's still fun to play with bots.

World of Guns on Steam is a cool free game, although it's not multiplayer.

Also, I haven't put a singe Cent into it, and I've managed to unlock almost everything. Nothing requires money, although currently there aren't enough guns to earn Credits from to unlock all the skeletons and vehicles from the bonus area. I'm thinking of putting ten Dollars into it to unlock the BMP-3 and HMMWV.

Star Wars The Old Republic is pretty good for a F2P MMORPG.
There is an optional subscription that gives some benefits, but they don't necessarily make the game easier for you, or you more effective.
It's basically cheaper to buy things from vendors and you gain experience a bit faster.

But having played for ages as a F2P user I've not felt like I'm being held back for not paying.
