otherwise it feels wrong

when I say: lol, I'm chuckling

when I say: LOL, I'm laughing pretty hard

when I say: lmao, I laughed so hard my rear went from USA to China

when I say: rotfl, I'm laughing on the floor, but needs to be rushed to the hospital because I hit the floor too hard (jk) :p

I don't think you necessarily have to. You're not communicating with a person face to face, so it's understandable that you wouldn't laugh even though you found something amusing. Sometimes I do actually laugh irl, but I normally wouldn't, because sometimes laughter is an actual form of communication that doesn't work over the internet.

I still say "lol" to let the person know I found what they said amusing.

i use it to let people know on the other end that i have a fun meaning to what i'm saying rather than "what the forget" it's "what the forget lol"

see what i mean?

I can look at a bit of paper flapping in the wind and it'll make me laugh, So yes absolutely.

if I say lol in caps then yeah

Yes I would love to have some crabs, sea food is really good ;)

When I use "lol" it's either an acknowledgement that they said something and that I'm listening (rather than k or something that seems dismissive, lol seems engaged) or if something they've said made me exhale sharply through my nose (less than a laugh, but still laughing). I'll use ROFL in caps or something when I actually laugh.
