Author Topic: In-game web browser  (Read 2100 times)

I've seen quite a few webpages being linked in the chat, simple enough.

Real problem is it takes forever to switch out of fullscreen, wait for the game to stop lagging, and open a new tab in Chrome just to find out that I've been timed out from the server.

What I'm asking for is an in-game web browser (could even just be the one in the Steam overlay) so that I can view images and related info linked in the chat without having to waste too much time waiting for everything to load.

This would mean so much to me.

Making an in game browser is extremely complex task; you'd have to write a renderer for HTML and CSS (just the thought of that, in something as slow as Torquescript with it's fairly limited GUI controls sounds...eeegghhg) as well as a JavaScript interpreter (a scripting language interpreted by a scripting language? Yeah no thanks)

Best solution IMO is to play in borderless window mode, or window mode with a resolution (you can set a custom resolution to anything you like other than the choices in the options menu, by using setRes(x,y);)  that's almost your entire screen

That's something only badspot can do. Too bad he already gave up development.

It gets really aggravating seeing useless crap like this in every topic.

Okay. Show us how to create a fully featured web browser in torkcript then if you don't think that only badspot can do this, or explain how

The progress is forget it.

doesn't mean that we won't see any more development?

"fully featured"? Nobody really said that it had to necessarily support JavaScript or CSS 3D transformations with box shadows, animations and rounded corners. A basic HTML renderer can be done pretty easily with a combination of GuiSwatchCtrl, GuiMLTextCtrl, GuiScrollCtrl, GuiBitmapCtrl and GuiBitmapButtonCtrl controls.

Okay: You are quoting Badspot out of context to create the illusion he's saying something he is not.

The progress is forget it.  Believe it or not, programming is to some degree a creative endeavor and requires some motivating factor other than the temporary cessation of shrieking children.

Badspot never said development had actually completely halted. He is merely saying that he is not going to dangle progress updates like a sugar-coated hard candy to get the forums to temporarily shut the forget up.

Stop posting out-of-context quotes.

And the result will be lamer than IE 6. You can't be serious.

He clearly says he has no motivation and therefore the progress is "forget it"?

Okay, first of all, therefor is an archaic form of for. Now, with that out of the way...

He is not saying that development has ceased, he's specifically saying that giving out a status update every week isn't worth it, because while it would make the forums temporarily shut up, it would also make them even more entitled in the long term.

Not a great exchange, especially considering how hard it is to actually tell how complete a project is before you've completed it.

If I spelled it wrong, what's the right spelling for what I meant?

I guess there are many ways to interpret his post.

The point is it being a fun challenge, nothing else.

get
steam
(could even just be the one in the Steam overlay)
Can you even read

Anyway as I put in the quote you could just try scripting a way to open links via the Steam overlay, if that's even remotely possible

If I spelled it wrong, what's the right spelling for what I meant?

therefore, meaning that one thing leads to the logical conclusion of another. "I think, therefore I am."

I was talking about the Badspot-bashing, but yes, you can make a basic web browser in TS.
