There is no pleasing you idiots.
The biggest problem with Tezuni's server has nothing to do with the server itself, or the game that it's hosting, but the caliber of player that ends up showing up on the server. Prison escape is a difficult-to-run gamemode namely because it requires moderation to work. In the same way that you need a player to be the 'banker' in Monopoly, prison escape needs a moderator or admin.
Under-moderation isn't the cause of the problems on the server either. We have lots of moderators and admins and usually there's one online at any given time (generally multiple) except very late at night when no one is playing anyway. The rules are really simple and so the moderators know exactly what to do when someone breaks a rule. We even have an add-on that has been massively successful in helping to make moderating the game as stream-lined as possible.
The problem start when people decide to take the opportunity to break the rules at the rare instances when there are no admins online. Then, when an admin gets on, the players want the rule-breaker banned ASAP without any evidence or justification. This creates the dilemma for the admins where either you:
- Ban the rule-breaker without enough evidence on the word of others
Or
- Don't ban the rule-breaker because there isn't enough evidence to prove that he did anything wrong
If we go with the first option and just ban the rule-breaker on faith that the other people on the server were telling the truth, we get yelled at by that player who goes and posts a drama thread. He either completely lies about the breaking the rules, or claims that there was some kind of misunderstanding that we didn't see because the admins weren't online.
If we go with the second option and refuse to ban the rule-breaker, whoever reported him goes and makes a drama thread about how the admins are passive and don't properly moderate the server. Either way, both options inevitably lead to us being stuff on when the problem was never the administration to begin with. Going back to the Monopoly brown townogy, what we get are tons of players who will deliberately wait until the 'banker' is out of the room getting a glass of water or something and then start rearranging the Community Chest card deck and moving houses and stuff. This all begs the question of who is really the problem here? The admins who physically cannot constantly supervise the server 24/7? Or the ever-rising tide of players who act like opportunistic douches and wait for the perfect opportunity to begin their bullstuff behavior? You decide.
