Do puzzles or buy the licence and upgrade it that way. Puzzles are free, but its kinda slow going and some puzzles are tough. Upgrading is pricey, but its the only way to get high level software besides hacking others.
Do some missions. Delete software is super easy, but gives very little, while destroy server is hard (and not recommended. Your ip will be on 4 servers' logs and the FBI will do something.) But they pay about 2-3k. Transfer money and check account pays really decent and is easy, but you have to make sure to login to the account and then login to the bank to clear your IP.

Don't ever research software yourself. It's the biggest waste of money there is. You should only be spending money on hardware, that's it.
