i own uplink but i just never took the time to learn how to play it

If the software's version is better then yours:
1. Download the softwares (You can download multiple, just go back to his files. When you've started the download of all the software, go to the task manager. Now, when a download completes in the task manager, you are given a button to "Complete" it. This will actually complete the download once the progress is 100%, and when you press this, the log file of the server will be written to, so basically quickly click all the Complete buttons, go to the server's log file and wipe it. If you see any other IPs, you many want to copy it before wiping.

Uh, you could try doing puzzles to get better versions of programs, such as crackers. Just keep doing puzzles until you get a mission. If your cracker is not strong enough to do the mission, continue with the puzzles.
