i feel like it wasn't necessary to make kopaka look like he weighs 30 tons.

His first incarnations had him with a shield, the only one of the toa team to have a defensive tool. He's the team's tank. The mighty glacier, if you will. It makes sense that they'd beef him up to bulky-armored-knight status.
