Author Topic: is it just me, or are horror games making a comeback?  (Read 1826 times)

it's pretty apparent the only reason horror is getting any attention right now is because of youtubers and streamers, but you would think that only gets it to an extent

i've seen horror games like neverending nightmares, alien: isolation, kraven manor, five nights at freddy's, etc all quite recently and they all seem to have pretty good reviews and originality in them.

idk if it IS just me, post your thoughts or whatever

I wanna see more occulus rift horror games; that stuff is immersive

Comeback may be the wrong word. More like resurgence. Comeback implies a bunch of good horror came out. Only a few good ones have.

its been a pretty steady steam tbh, its just that a bunch came out fairly recently

alien: isolation is really good by the way

isolation was awesome, and in the pipe we got evil within, silent hills, soma, routine, resident evil remake- it's lookin good for horror

Guys stop hyping isolation
I want it but I don't have monee

Same here :( Damn Smash Bros.

I want to see as game where there's no jumpscares

just ambience and knowing somethings coming for you and when you were it its suddle and not some cheap jump scare

letting your mind create the horror for you about the worst case scenario

I think Its a tough market to make a good game in

you gotta throw in a loud sound or two every once in awhile

i mean games that are ALL jumpscares just suprise you, not really scare you.

Pathologic is a good choice for that, as long as you can tolerate the atrocious translation. Though I would wait for the remake that just got kickstarted before you spend any money.

people say that but... a "jumpscare" is the climax of horror. you can't have effective horror without a jump, and even if you don't program in a jump, you're bound to be startled. if there's no jumpscare at all, or just jump, at some point the player becomes complacent, and then when the horror happens the suspense is over and it's nothin.

yeah, honestly, ya kinda need jumpscares. if you're in constant fear in a game because the ambience and setting is so good, you're in fear BECAUSE you're expecting the jumpscare. at least, i am.

Most people who act like they know what a horror game needs and doesn't need generally have no idea what they're talking about (myself included, at times).  Particularly, but not limited to, the people who act like horror games that include jump scares in any way at all are cheap or stupid.

Also, one time I saw a comment on a YouTube video about how a certain horror game wasn't even scary, all it did was "keep me up all night thinking about it."  Oh, people.  :P
