Author Topic: Taboo's Big College Shopping Spree - wait i need a what  (Read 1572 times)

Come this January, I begin my e x c i t i n g teritiary education!!! Thanks to the magic of waving around my achievements and Hispanicism, as well as the obligatory contributions from my shady uncle, I've got tuition pretty much entirely covered. However, I lack some basic equipment and I'd like the help of you folks in deciding what to get. As was recently discussed, I only have about 4 grand at my disposal, but I'd really like to use half of that or less if at all possible. Phone bill, CryEngine subscription, transportation, ability to pay for my own darn meals when going out with folks, etc. mean that I'd like to have a reasonable amount of money on hand. Here's what I need (so far):

  • LCD Tablet - I used to have a half decent tablet laptop years ago, but I sold it because it was frankly not very good. What I'm looking for is an LCD display digitizer of sub-Cintiq levels, since I don't think I really need to go that fancy. As long as I can see what I'm doing and the tablet itself is of decent quality, I'm happy.
  • Gaming Laptop - but tabbo y a gaybn laptop I'm going to an art school for game design, do the math. As I understand, it's mostly ~Unity~ over there, and I myself usually work in the CryEngine, so it needs to be able to handle these two engines well. I don't want to be that guy who had to kickstart a new computer because his machine couldn't handle his own project.
  • High-quality Microphone - A decent part of my portfolio has been vocal and instrumental performance, but I haven't been able to record anything for months since I always just used my high school's equipment. I need decent enough equipment that I can lock myself into a bathroom and record a stuffty guitar for decent sound quality.
  • A guitar -
i was going to say i only have an acoustic guitar but then i realised it was stolen when my house was burglarised months ago
    *wah wahh wahhhh
If it has strings and isn't made for babies, I'll take it.
  • A processor beyond an i3 - LGA1155, so long as it works I'm happy.

More to come as I am told what I missed figure out what else I need. Links would be appreciated alongside people's suggestions. For each item, I think about $500 is reasonable, maybe a little more for the laptop.
Your help is appreciated, thanks in advance, Boobland Forums.

ART SCHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

You think you can pick up some decent taste in anime characters?

Pretty obvious but, I'm sure you have an electronic tuner and metronome on your phone, right?
Then again if you need to tune with an electric guitar you're gonna want a tuner you can plug in anyways.

apparently the Blue Yeti microphones are very well enjoyed, and iirc the TwoBestFriends lp'ers use that or the snowball and their voice quality sounds fine.

this one is the "pro"

since you have a $500 budget or whatever it's pretty decently priced, plus blue has all sorts of wacky addons you can buy for their microphones

Why do you need a gaming laptop? Why not just keep a desktop in your dorm?

make sure to get a sketchbook
brother
i have infinite paper

Ah, wait, I remember looking at Blue's equipment a bit ago, and my housemate informed me that one of our buddies had bought something of theirs on recommendation and it ended up being crap. I'll keep them in mind until I can hit up that fella and get any actual confirmation on that, though. Neither of these gentlemen are particularly well known for their reliability.

>dorm
Also, it's a stated requirement. A lot of work is done in-class on your own machine.

I also own a Blue Snowball, and it's pretty nice with voice quality. While it's certainly not close to studio levels of clearness, the only way to have your recordings sound like stuff is if they have to process through a dial up connection first.
The microphone itself is very large however, and with it's 360 degree pickup range, it seems like it's a bit sensitive, especially in my noisy household.

Also the cable is really long and bulky so it doesn't tangle.
