Opinion time
Seems like we are running out of ideas, people aren't looking for ideas in the right places, certain concepts haven't been fully explored or impossible to improve upon, or we are limited by current technology.
Look at the RTS genre and all the CNC clones. There isn't a whole lot you can do there except for mimicking Wargame and the Total Annihilation/Supcom series. Suffers from a disease known as MOBA.
FPSs: How many Doom, Quake, CODs, battlefields can we make with new and exciting features that aren't gimmicks? Not many. Close to beaten to death, can be improved in scale(large player battles, however we are limited by the technology of the time).
RPGs: There is some room to grow in both the isometric and first person genre of fps games.
Platformers: Beaten to death.
Racing: Beaten to death.
Horror: Beaten to death. People are tired of jump scares and gore.
Sandbox Games: Some room for exploration, as long as its not another infiminer/minecraft.
MMOs: Beaten to death, lots of hype and promise for something new that doesn't play like WoW or Everquest. In the end they almost always turn into a Wow/Everquest clone.
Another thing to note is the lack of "old games". Having these around could help keep people who have played everything new something to do.
