Author Topic: Rally's rocks n masonry stuff  (Read 5517 times)

So I decided I wanted to do some stone working masonry related stuff, so I went out and found some stones and then carved them down into neat rectangles

They're sandstone so it's kinda cheating (sandstone is softer than most stones) but it's the only type of rock I can find where I live (australia)

chiseled that down to about:

bought some power tools out of kmart:

grinded and sanded it down into this:

also comes in mini size!

give me more shapes and i might do them tomorrow if i can get more stone

Is it possible to do minor details?

If so, make a blockhead outline, make a 2x4 brick, ooh! Also make a star because that would be pretty cool :)

It'll be difficult as forget, but I can try. gonna need a good piece of stone, and probably a wood chisel
2x4 seems easy enough lol

Made some progress today.

Bought an angle grinder and some discs; now I just need a diamond tipped saw. I'm considering just buying a 115mm diamond tipped disc out of Bunnings, because it'll fit just fine in the angle grinder (need a special guard though). Makes shaping stones much easier, especially older/harder stones.

Stone is still harder than the discs so until I get a diamond tipped saw I can't make perfect SSS stones. Although it's certainly loving better than the little grout-remover multi tool I was using.

Went out the other day and found a few stones, I got two massive pieces, they were heavy as forget to carry all the way back to the house. Soaked and brushed them, got all the top soil off, and then I got to work on the first (smaller) one. Already got it down to a square shape, just need to flatten the sides now. It's a pretty neat looking sedimentary piece with some layering throughout it.

Pwn'd the forget out of my thumb earlier today.

Chisel slipped and slammed neatly onto the middle of my thumb. Left a decently deep cut. Serves me right for chiseling toward myself.

Also here's a picture of a little birdie sculpt I'm working on

for the love of god, montresor

love the rock work. my sister used to take a class on this a long time ago

oddly enough i love rocks too. i have a pet rock named toby. he has his own cage and everything. i actually made a topic about him some time ago cus he just kinda showed up

Hopefully Im not the only one besides Aoki who knows the reference. Anyways I never tried masonry, but it seems like it would be fun to do for passing the time, and creating figures and stuff.

Make a dinosaur

das gonna be hard
maybe a 2D shape. it'll put it on the list

It's really rewarding, even if you're no good at it. Super easy to get into too, all you need is some motivation and tools. It's the oldest hobby known to mankind lol, no real training required.
