sure man
Compared to vector or 3D art, it takes less effort to make the same level of detail. It still requires effort and skill, but it requires less by sheer nature of there being less to draw.

well no

pixel art is minimalistic in such a way that to get really good at pixel art you have to be good at tricking the player into filling in gaps in the low resolution with color and form in order to imply finer nuances about the world, environment and activity, which actually takes a lot of effort

like it's actually probably about the same amount of effort as just raw drawing the detail but it's a different effect

like mainline traditional art (and stufftier pixel art) are pretty in a way where they could only possibly be one thing and that thing is pretty, but isn't open to interpretation

pixel art is relatively unique in that a person can look at pixel art and see one thing and another person can see something else but both people see the same fundamental structure and skeleton

it's why you see so forgetin many interpretations of classic characters, because you don't actually know- but you can guess- what details are present in their design from their original 8 to 16 bit sprites

also squid pixel art looks like it's going to be around for a long time as it's become a mainstay for indie artists and a staple of the movement as a whole due to it being easy to pick up and it's relative cheapness compared to it's alternatives and as long as you dont make anything that looks like it rips off something popular (like how terraria looks like final fantasy art, but say river city ransom is probably fine) you should do OK

and also don't forgetin try to pass it off as retro

it's not retro, pixel art isn't retro

never mention in the description or title or anything in your game that you're doing pixel art. it's like breaking kayfabe

I'm gonna go with a lot of the other people here, if you want to use a pixelated style for your game, go right ahead.
Pixelated games are still being sold and liked these days and to be honest, are pretty timeless.
This of course also depends on how well executed it is, there is still an amount of things one can do with a pixelated art style to make it look good or at least better then just some pixels moving over the screen.
And as you said, art is not everything, sound and movement play a huge role in how the game is received too, but people will of course make their first judgement mostly based on how something looks.
You can argue on that, but i am pretty sure that most people judge a game by how it looks first.
Some leave it at that, other may dig a bit deeper, but it will be the first impression of your game nevertheless.

So do it, but do it good. ;)
And the retro style thing is sometimes true, but i think a lot of times it is just a PR thing and they just used it because it is a relatively easier way to make 2D things for games.

Only say it is to capture the retro feeling when your entire game is an homage to the retro games.
I suppose like Shovel Knight, not sure about it though. :P

my game is 2d and is on 32x32 tileset textures. but i use 6 layers. things get intense on screen. its busy enough to be considered great graphics.

I enjoy pixel games because it's stylistic simple. It's not about the best graphics, it's about the style. Nostalgia plays a role in it being raised in the SNES I find pixelscapes to be beautiful when done well.

To break from pixel style games (as I'm making art for one), I'd like to get into cell shaded models Wind Waker style. Has nearly the same charm.

do you have any images of your game?

VVVVVV and Terraria are good though
Fez is amazing too. Phil Fish is an starfish, but his game is p good.

"naw man he made that dumb retro 8-bit indie stuff like 10 years ago he's just a hack".
Umm, what? I have never ever read or heard anyone mention that when deciding for a game purchase. Nobody will write off something just because you forgeted up a game before, and if they do, they probably won't be the audience you are aiming for, unless you make a pewdieforget fan-game or something handicapped.
If the news spread that it really is an awesome game: nobody will care. If it was 10 years ago, nobody will care, because it was 10 loving years ago!
So don't worry about that, even if some forgeters decide to write it off, well duh, one less incompetent player for your community. A win in my eyes.

Make some Metal Slug type sprites and animations.
Dat stuff is so cool lookin that nobody cares about pixmels.
