WHAT'S GOING ON?

Welcome to the eighth installment in Sid Jairo's Europa Forumalis! In Columbia, the great powers of Europe will attempt to spread their influence far and wide--from the beaches of the New World to the spices of the East Indies. The name of the game this time around is expansion, exploration, and colonization. You may expand your empire in any way you see fit; whether it be through peaceful colonization, violent eviction, or incessant war.

Do be wary, however. One costly war may end up with you forfeiting your entire empire. Throughout the centuries that lay ahead, humanity will go through significant technological and spiritual changes. Some will result in the complete overhaul of warfare. Some will result in the nastiest wars known to man. No matter the path, march forward and let your armies fight for the glory of your nation!

HOW IS THIS PLAYED?
Simply claim a nation and roleplay! It's as simple as one post.

HOW DOES THE IDEA TREE WORK?
The Idea Tree is an entirely new mechanic to the Sid Jairo series. You pick one choice from each set (designated by a large OR) to customize your nation's government, diplomatic style, and military preference. You may do this as soon as the RP begins.

In the Diplomatic column, picking conciliatory, shady, and intimidatory opens up another tree. You can research one of these ideas every day until it is filled out.

Do not make your idea picks secret. Mark your choices and post them in this thread.

WHAT TECHNOLOGIES ARE THERE?
There are three tech trees this time around:
- Administrative
- Diplomatic
- Military

You may only research 1 tech from 1 tree per day. Keep track of what you've researched.

Do not make your research secret. Post about what you are researching.

RULES

1. Battles between players are settled through either a single or a series of posts by myself and the battle's affiliates. The players' choices in the Idea Tree with influence the outcome of the battle as well as limited RNG.
2. Teching will be made public by all participants of this RP. Do not keep what you have researched private. This also applies to Idea Tree picks.
3. Map edits that are not included in the OP are not final unless identified as such
4. Act within reason (that includes omniscience/metagaming/powergaming)
5. Trade is allowed
6. You cannot sell/give away/donate/whatever territories
7. Teching up will be handled on a daily basis. Every IRL day accounts for the completion of 1 tech in 1 tree. When a player reaches a barrier that displays a year (eg High Renaissance (1500)), they may not continue on any tree until the indicated year is reached. This is to promote research in several trees and prevent people from getting certain techs too early.
8. Naval combat will be handled similar to land battles
9. You may form alliances and defensive pacts and all those shenanigans
10. You cannot RP for nations you do not control
11. You cannot blitzkrieg other nations right out of the gate
12. Try to stay within reason of the era.
13. When engaged in war, you must wait for your opponent to respond/be aware of what is happening before commencing your next attack.
14. Player nations cannot be fully annexed. A player may only become a vassal of another player. The vassalized player may outsource help from others in order to help them gain independence.

Portugal begins to support the food industries a little bit more, hoping that a fed people are a happy people. We do this by investing into the farmers and nobles themselves with farming equipment, fishing equipment, etc.
