Author Topic: does anyone else focus on improving their brain ability/knowledge?  (Read 1041 times)

I have a few questions, as well as some tips.

I've always felt that my mental ability is lacking, as well as being slightly undeveloped in a few areas. Would practicing on sites like Khan Academy help me? For the time being I am suspended, but my mom talked to the school and the principal actually listened to my side of the story, and I should be back in by next week depending what my principal decides. I also learned that the kid who attacked me got suspended as well, so I'm happy about that.

2 weeks ago, my math teacher suggested it'd be good to sign up for Khan Academy. I made an account tonight, and I'm just wondering if practicing and doing courses on this site will help me throughout the year. I'm not necessarily looking to boost my grades, I'm just looking to add a little more stats to my brain, or, to be simple, understanding.

Also, I've learned that focusing on learning a language or doing brain training games will help tremendously in certain areas. I've been using Elevate for a long time now, and I'm quite happy with the results. Don't buy a subscription though, just do your daily brain exercises.

so, answer the title i guess

I used some apps previously. Cognifit and Lumosity, then Rosetta Stone thing for Android.
I liked Fit Brains for Android since I can just carry it around but after 3 training sessions it asks you for $$$. So much for a free app.
And I got too tired to continue with Cognifit and Lumosity, as well, plus they also have paid features.

I lookup big words I don't understand online if that works, I'm always curious about what certain words mean :I

I know a lot more about the world than I would have today because I use to have this program called Encarta, which is like an electronic encyclopedia.

I study things all the time, I'm always searching up biology/psychology/life related things on YouTube, Wikipedia and books sometimes, even though I don't take biology at school. If it's not that I'm always looking up space related things, rockets or something to do with designing and manufacturing and a bunch of other stuff that's probably not worth mentioning.

I don't really focus on getting more knowledge, just trying to focus itself

it's not adhd-level, but I have a hard time completing timed tests because of it

I'm not going to repeat my "How the brain works"/Fun & Learning rant again, but basically, mental development really is just doing practice, over and over on specific types of challenges. That said, you need to make it "fun" for yourself. I don't mean funny or happy or entertaining; I mean that you need to be able to "want" to do the things you're doing, kind of like when you play video games, go for a drive, cook a meal for yourself etc; aka, you have to give yourself a purpose/reason why a certain activity is important, and unless you're a sociopath with no emotional attachment, you need to make yourself emotionally driven into doing that activity.

Ever since I read "A Theory of Fun", I've begun studying a lot of psychology and philosophy. I've got a whole new mindset on how the world works. I'll likely never become an artist or a mathematician, but I can now explain very interesting concepts on why we as humans are in the current state we're in, and I've got some ideas on how I would like to change the education and political systems in order to "better" society.

i once passed a test studying from youtube

i probably spend more time on khan academy, code.org, and various youtube science channels than actually playing games which i claim i do all the time

when im inhibited in any way, i debate with myself. its actually really fun and has made me think so much differently about everything

usually its inhibited me that starts the debate, but usually ill go off about some topic, spend a good two hours relaying it out loud, then when i sober up, i think back on it, touch up on some points, then when im inhibited again i bring the topic back up. it literally just goes back and forth till ive either solved the issue or developed a whole new outlook on something

in my mind my philosophies sound much more positive and humane, and as much as id love to share them with people, i have no clue how to organize all my thoughts into something presentable, so ive never been able to share them with anyone

although any time i give people advice, they always seem to mention about how they've "never thought of it that way", so who knows

I don't go online and do random math problems but I do homework in depth and stuff

I read nonfiction like addicts need their fix

mostly history

You just asked the BLOCKLAND FORUMS if they focus on improving their brain ability. smh..
