Author Topic: I'm going to install Linux on an old laptop; what OS should I choose?  (Read 1937 times)

Right now you are disregarding what I say just because I use Linux.

Do you not see a problem here.

if op posts his specs and they are mega low (hint: they cant be because he is running vista) then I lose

no im defending my suggestion. whys this always gotta be about you

Oh, yes, I completely forgot about the specs.
RAM: 2GB
Holy stuff it's 10:45 PM, I gotta get to sleep. I'll read this tomorrow, OK?
oh wait he did post his specs. amazing! yeah this can run windows 8 no problem. if you think otherwise maybe its time to step outside of the Linux faction.

unless of course you really don't want windows and you want to become an elite hacker then yeah use Linux.

OS: Windows Vista (do you see why I want to install Linux on this thing now?)
RAM: 2GB
Storage: I think around 500 GB; unsure
CPU: Unsure as well, has integrated graphics I suppose
GPU: ^

Xubuntu sounds interesting.

You ended your second loving post about it with an insult to me you starfish.

And stop using the "oh, people who use Linux just want to be 1337 h4x3rs" card every other post on the subject. It makes you look like an idiot.

And in those videos, it just shows the OS itself running. Good luck trying to run anything that doesn't come pre-installed with Windows 8.1.

Your PC could potentially run XP or Windows 7.

But if you want Linux, I would gravitate towards Ubuntu.

I still cant believe after so long people still always think im 100% serious in everything I say even when half my forum posts are obvious run of the mill jokes

my suggestion is as genius as ever. windows 8 can run fine. he has enough ram and hdd space to run it.
you know when I would agree with your Linux suggestion? if he was sporting ram below 512mb. then yeah you have no other choice but Linux. but that's not the situation so sorry that I didn't suggest Linux like everyone else

Install Gentoo.

but no seriously, get linux mint or debian.

Maybe it's because in the past you've been a massive richard to people who use operating systems that you don't. Seriously, shut the forget up about it.
And I wouldn't say I was joking if I were you. Someone might pull the "jokes on you I was pretending" image.

And did you see my edit? Sure the OS itself can run, but as soon as it has to do something that's not built in, it will preform horribly. This is why Linux preforms so well on old laptops. Because the OS itself is a collection of software from different sources meant to run on certain hardware. Look at Ubuntu for example. Lots is made by the Ubuntu team, but the vast majority of it is organized free software. For example, the Linux Kernel, Xorg, LightDM, Unity being based on Gnome 2, etc.

And also there's the fact that you have to stuff out at least $100 for Windows 8.

maybe that's not what it was and youre taking it out of context, again.

that's a lie and you know it.

there is a reddit section dedicated to getting it dirt cheap.

but its op's choice and I made my suggestion. and with all this windows cant run on it propaganda he will pick Linux I hope you feel good about yourself you linommunist.

Oh stuff, I just realized I don't have any blank discs to write Linux on to.

Can't you use a bootable USB drive to install Linux?
USB drives work as well.
Ok, that's what I thought. Just going to do that instead.

A friend of mine would suggest Lubuntu above all others. If not Ubuntu is an easy choice.
