I felt the urge to talk to someone about science, so I did. This is how it went:
Farad: science - what do you know about it?
DragonoidSlayer: It broke?
Farad: it broke my mind
Farad: do you have any interest in science?
DragonoidSlayer: Mabey?
Farad: i'd like to chat with you about the wizardly world of science
Farad: the things i've come across in my research
Farad: it blew my mind
Farad: i want to blow your mind
Farad: if you're willing to listen, that is
DragonoidSlayer: Ummmmm
DragonoidSlayer: Sure?
Farad: ok cool. i've never done this btw
Farad: let me know if u get bored or begin having desire to physically rearrange my exterior
DragonoidSlayer: Ok, lol
Farad: first i want to tell u this crazy stuff I've learned about how time works
Farad: it's hard to comprehend and I can't even understand it fully, but basically I've been looking at Einstein's theory of relativity and time
Farad: Contrary to common belief, the rate at which time passes is not constant everywhere in the universe
Farad: (also let me know if u don't understand something and I'll explain more)
Farad: Ok so the passage of time isn't the same everywhere
Farad: here on earth, we all experience the same rate of time passing by
Farad: (it shows that you're typing a message so I'm waiting lol)
DragonoidSlayer: Our time isnt even correct. Thats why we have Fall back and Leap forward. Also, I know. A year on Venus lasts 224.7 Earth days
DragonoidSlayer: lol, yeah. Sorry
DragonoidSlayer: Had to search a year on Venus
Farad: Ok that's good thinking, but it's actually a bit different than einstein's principle of time
Farad: and I'll explain why!
DragonoidSlayer: okey
Farad: Ok so the reason that venus' year is a different amount of days is that it is a different distance away from the sun
Farad: a year for each planet is how long it takes the planet to travel around the sun
DragonoidSlayer: Not really. Planets in different solar systems still have time, and dont depend on our sun, that is so useless and small compared to all the other stuff
Farad: i mean our 8 planets, oops lol
Farad: I'll be more clear next time
Farad: we define a year as how long it takes to revolve one cycle around the sun
Farad: and that doesn't apply to planets that don't revolve around our sun
DragonoidSlayer: There are other solar systems with Suns and planets
Farad: yes
DragonoidSlayer: Lol, dosent matter. Continue
Farad: Alright, so how we define things like seconds can get tricky
Farad: most of our measurements of time are related to how long it takes the earth to revolve around the sun or rotate
Farad: down to seconds
Farad: another way we can put a second into numbers is by taking something in nature that cycles constantly always
Farad: such as putting an atom between 2 mirrors and bouncing it ack and forth, moving at the speed of light
Farad: back and forth*
Farad: as you would imagine, it bounces back and forth a LOT of times in one second
Farad: that is how atomic clocks work
Farad: the crazy thing that einstein came up with is that the speed that something is traveling at is related to how much time is passing
Farad: if you're traveling really fast around the earth for example, say like maybe half the speed of light, you would see things on the earth moving faster than normal. you would see a clock on earth couting through hours while the clock on your ship would count a minute
Farad: now tell me if you believe me or not
DragonoidSlayer: Hmmmmmm
DragonoidSlayer: When in space, your ship is in orbit, but not around the sun. So in therory, you should see it go faster. But not actually. I think that If that were so, science would be so far ahead. There would be am ission to send a person out for 1 year (ON the ship) and come back, with advcanced technology
Farad: i'm confused what you're saying
DragonoidSlayer: Lol
Farad: why would science be farther ahead?
Farad: oh i think i understand
DragonoidSlayer: You said that if you go into space, clocks on earth would appear to go faster
DragonoidSlayer: If so
DragonoidSlayer: Then they could go out for a year, then come back. And technology would be advanced
Farad: oh ok
Farad: I see what you're saying
Farad: Ok so in my scenario that I described
Farad: The people on earth would still be experiencing time the same as we are now
Farad: and the person on the space ship would still be experiencing time the same as we percieve it - he wouldn't be like moving around in fast motion or anything
Farad: from his own perspective, that is
Farad: but when he looked down on earth, he could see that he was infact, moving through time faster
Farad: without aging the same as people on earth
Farad: his local time would be maintained
Farad: so lets say he flew around the earth for a few months at half the speed of light, and then came down to land
Farad: He would literally be in the future
DragonoidSlayer: No
Farad: ok so you don't believe me
Farad: that's good because I can prove to you that this phenomena is real
Farad: GPS satellites that we use today have clocks that are accurate to the billionth of a second
Farad: What we have observed is that they don't count the same as our equally accurate clocks here on earth
Farad: They have to be adjusted for their difference in the passage of time
Farad: Which is about 6 billionth of a second every minute or month or year (i can't remember which it was)
Farad: This in fact proves Einstein's theory
Farad: His formulas are correct and I could derive them for you, but idk how advanced you are in math
DragonoidSlayer: Lol, not at all
Farad: it's actually a lot simpler than i first imagined
DragonoidSlayer: Then gimme dem
Farad: Ok this is going to be difficult without showing images
Farad: but I'll try
Farad: Consider the atomic clock
Farad: it's an atom traveling the speed of light, bouncing between 2 mirrors
Farad: Now to simulate speed, we'll move the mirrors at a speed
Farad: the atom will keep up with the mirrors by traveling at a diagonal path through space
Farad: i should just link you the video that taught me howthis works
Farad: if you want to learn this stuff, you have to do it for yourself. here is the video and the simple math that tells you how fast time is passing, based on your velocity (i suggest starting at 7:10) -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZrjMmMBa_8Farad: Anyway, you can look at that later. if you want me to shut up just let me know. if not, I'll talk about some other crazy things i've encountered
DragonoidSlayer: Idc
Farad: i know it can be a lot of work to understand science, but it's possible to do it. I get the since that you're intimidated by it and you think you can't be a scitentist because you aren't smart enough. i'm not like a crazy smart guy or anything. i just have a passion for it and i think ppl take science the wrong way
Farad: is that why u say you don't care to hear more?
DragonoidSlayer: What the fak... Im 13. I dont give a stuff about being a scientist. I personally think science is a waste of time. yeah, learning the basics is mandatory. But any more courses are useless, unless you want to be a doctor. Which I dont
Farad: alright I'll admit, i had a similar mindset at your age
Farad: i had no clue what science and math were for
Farad: i thought school was pretty much useless
DragonoidSlayer: You need math for Scripting
Farad: I want to tell you how i began to think differently about science and math, and how i saw that it had a purpose pretty much beyond anything i had known before
Farad: when you take a physics class that relates math to the movement of planets and how gravity, electricity, magnetism, optics, fluids and gases can be described by numerical formulas, you 'might' understand the importance of math and science
Farad: you want to make a computer work faster? you'll have to know the physics behind electricty and magnetism
Farad: the field scripting is a miniscule result of the work of pyhsicists
Farad: and engineers
Farad: you might recognize the name Alan Turing. He's famous in the world of computer science
Farad: He basically invented the fundamental methods that computers use to function even now
Farad: but anyway, if you really want to do something amazing in life that's beyond our humanly nonsense, you have to know a little about science
Farad: and you have to have a passion to learn and create and to discover!
Farad: now pls tell me why u think science is a waste of time, because to me it is more interesting than everything else in life.
DragonoidSlayer: I already told you
Farad: lol sry i didn't understand
Farad: can u repeat it pls :0
DragonoidSlayer: "DragonoidSlayer: What the fak... Im 13. I dont give a stuff about being a scientist. I personally think science is a waste of time. yeah, learning the basics is mandatory. But any more courses are useless, unless you want to be a doctor. Which I dont
"
Farad: ok so you stated science is useless 'unless you want to be a doctor'
DragonoidSlayer: Not necisarily
Farad: i agree, not necessarily
Farad: because other professions use science too
Farad: such as engineers
Farad: the people that invent stuff like iphones and roads and the internet
Farad: and cars
DragonoidSlayer: Yeah, I got it
Farad: and every other technology you can imagine
Farad: alright lol
Farad: I'm going to college soon to be an engineer
Farad: a 'mechanical' engineer
Farad: ok so I think a lot of schools do a really poor job at making students actually interested in science
Farad: they make it really boring
Farad: but science is how you accomplish what i believe to be the greatest possible achievements in life
Farad: i got this mindset by trying to view the world from a blank point of view, without any bias
Farad: which is probably not possible unless you were just born, but wahtev
Farad: anyway, i encourage u to think about the world right now. think about your existence, why you exist, how you exist, how you feel, the mechanisms that allow u to think in your mind, the origin of existence, the lives of all living things ever!
Farad: tell me how you feel
DragonoidSlayer: Ima go
DragonoidSlayer: Also
DragonoidSlayer: Do you like boss battles?
Farad: ya
DragonoidSlayer: I helped make the new map
Farad: nice
Farad: ok nice talking to ya
DragonoidSlayer: Got the Map Maker tag n everything
Farad: hope to make u appreciate science more at some point
Farad: good luck in your endeavours
DragonoidSlayer: Probably at some point, but right now im not into it
Farad: the thing is, life is limited
Farad: you don't have unlimited time to think about it lol
Farad: but cya
Farad: dont waste your life
DragonoidSlayer: Whats your Religion?
Farad: hmm
DragonoidSlayer: ?/
Farad: I can't say I'm a christian or any other category that i know of, but i do believe that there may have been a creator, that created the world. I could talk more about this but I'm not sure if u want to hear it
Farad: people are sensitive about this
DragonoidSlayer: Ye... probably not
DragonoidSlayer: I would try and get you to think of God the way you want me to think of science (In a way) But then again. You might feel the way I am about science
Farad: I honestly think that the idea of an afterlife was created by humans because we're afraid of the unknown
Farad: throughout history we've come up with tales to explain things that we don't understand
Farad: humans are naturally scared of what they can't understand
Farad: religion soothes that fear
Farad: i can't be expected to believe in a god that created a world in which it is reasonable to not believe in god
DragonoidSlayer: What if God is true? What id there is an afterlife? What do you think happens to all of the atheusts or satanists
DragonoidSlayer: *if
Farad: you're proposing i should believe in god out of fear that i will go to hell
Farad: that is probably why you pretend to believe in god, and that is why I used to pretend to believe in god
Farad: because i was scared
DragonoidSlayer: Scared of what?
Farad: scared of literally being tortured for eternity
Farad: probably the worst imaginable thing ever
DragonoidSlayer: If you are to beleive in hell, then you beleive in God. They are both linked, you cant just think one is real, and not the other. If you do think one is real. Then your pretty much fine, unless you are satanist.
Farad: i don't think either of them is real
Farad: are*
DragonoidSlayer: Then what do you think happens after death?
DragonoidSlayer: What do you think everything came from?
DragonoidSlayer: I realize that you will say science
DragonoidSlayer: But the big bang dosent just happen. Energy was never even a thing until God created it
Farad: Alright I'll ansswer your questions one by one
Farad: What happens after death? We stop being conscious, we stop existing, no pain, no feeling. we become what we were before we were born, which is nothing. it doesn't sound pleasing, but that is reality.
Farad: I didn't seem to have a problem with not existing before i was born, so i shouldn't have a problem with it after i'm dead
Farad: that is all we can conclude. anything beyond our observation is unpredictable. maybe there is an afterlife, but given the world around us, there is no evidence that there is life after death
DragonoidSlayer: Then theres no evidence for you not to beleive in god.
DragonoidSlayer: *God
Farad: that is true, I can't prove that god doesn't exist, because god isn't a physical thing
DragonoidSlayer: God is tho, everything around you didnt just happen. God had to start this. Now if 69.5% of all people beleive in God. Why dosent the rest of the % beleive in him?
Farad: god is in our minds and in our soul. god is an idea, and souls are also an idea
DragonoidSlayer: Farad, many years ago dont you know the theroy that the sun revolved around the earth?
DragonoidSlayer: Duh you do
DragonoidSlayer: Yeah, it was wrong
Farad: and your point is
DragonoidSlayer: Some people depend on science for answers. Thinking it was Science that created the Universe
DragonoidSlayer: And in a way it did
DragonoidSlayer: But as far as I car, it could be false
Farad: you shouldn't say "science created" something
Farad: science is the study of the world
Farad: by observation
DragonoidSlayer: I think you know what I mean.
Farad: science is the pursuit of truth. i don't understand how people can just deny it like it's a hypothesis
DragonoidSlayer: A while ago, like I said. Science said that the Sun revolved around the Earth. And everybody thought this was true. Today, how can we know that what science is telling us isnt a lie, but isnt true
Farad: I've never heard of that story
Farad: that scientists thought the sun revolved around the earth
DragonoidSlayer: Nicolaus Copernicus
Farad: i'm pretty sure that was made up
DragonoidSlayer: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei
Farad: but if it wasn't, i'm sure it was a scientist that didn't have the technology or resources to make a complete conclusion
Farad: ok I'll look at the link lol
DragonoidSlayer: U dont have to read that
Farad: are you sure you aren't confusing philosophers with scientists?
DragonoidSlayer: I think I might have given you the wrong link
DragonoidSlayer: Do you know what geocentric is?
Farad: ya it was popular in acient greece
DragonoidSlayer: What is it
Farad: a description of the world where earth is at the center of all planets and stars and other matter
DragonoidSlayer: Yes
DragonoidSlayer: That was what everybody beleived.
Farad: modern science is different than ancient science
Farad: ancient science consisted of looking at the sky, seeing that stars appeared to rotate the earth
Farad: modern science consists of better ways to make observations
Farad: i'm not sure what the argument is at this point
Farad: scientists recognize that not everything can be explained currently
Farad: that is what makes science interesting though
Farad: you have a chance to discover something that wasn't known before
Farad: it might even save the world :0
Farad: you want to know who will be the first people to travel in sweet space vehicles and discover new worlds? they will be scientists.
