Author Topic: I will start doing a Game Developing course!  (Read 968 times)

This year I want to make some cool stuff, and I found a pretty neat game developing class in my state this week, I have a dream of making my own games and this is so exciting!

The cool thing is that once the course is over you'll need to create a game to finish it, then you're on your own, I'm pretty excited to do it and it also includes 3D games, so it's not just 2D side scrollers or anything like a bunch of basic game courses tells you to do. i want to make my own sandbox game

Do you guys have any tips to get started? I know there is some very talented people here and I would love to discuss about game development with you all!

Which engine do you plan to develop in? Will your class focus on any in particular?

I would like to see some of your games! In my area i signed up for one but it was really just them teaching us how to use alice. Still fun, but not what i expected at all.

Well I believe we'll be taking different types of engines to develop different genres of games, after all they did listed that almost every single type of game is included, heck even racing! :D

Okay to be honest I'm not sure, once I get there to see more details I'll post 'em here.

Ok let me know... It would be very hard to teach to every engine and genre, so I expect the professor will use one or a few standard engines for demonstration.

What do you have in mind? Sounds like you're going for a racing game.

I also really want to make my own massive sandbox game, with plenty of easy to access tools to create a bunch of cool stuff!

Make a generic indie voxel sidescrolling platformer because it hasn't been done before.
on a serious note, that is really cool and I hope you do good.

you better be really good at math if you want to do well at that class.

Butt, pls

Filipe, I'm a student of a game design course.

My biggest tip outside of time management, is DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE THEORY. Way too many game teachers are richardheads who only care about the How (i.e. How to make a rocket launcher shoot chickens, how to make a UI function). Barely any actually teach you the "What" or the "Why", and so most students of these badly designed courses end up as semi-decent programmers who know how to make Halo clones/2D platformers.

Don't be that guy, Filipe.

What theory?

The theory of evolution.

What theory?
Game Design theory. Why do people enjoy games? What are mechanics? How do you do proper playtesting to make new, fun games without spending lots of effort? Stuff like that.

Take everything you want to do in your final game and throw out at least half of it. You won't be able to do as much as you want due to time lost from UNFORSEEN MISHAPS. Probably. If you don't manage to make any bugs that take forever to debug, gj.
