It was a 3 year old, they're not big.
When you shake someone severely, particularly a child, you're literally shaking their brain around the inside of their skull.
Their brain gets smashed by the skull protecting it, causing bleeding and brain damage.

When the shaking is over and the brain swells it pushes against the confines of the skull, putting pressure on itself and further causing damage.

At younger ages, your spinal cord connecting to your brain isn't developed much until you are older. You can stil shape that cord when you are older, but it would take an extremely large amount of force to do it. That's why you can't shake babies.

yeah spinal cord damage ok but brain damage? like brain swelling because they mentioned they had to remove skull bone to let it swell? I don't think spinal damage causes that. that's something a head + ground combination would do

idk how big this baby is but that's a lot of energy to shake a 3 year old to brain damage. besides he would more likely get spinal cord damage like the subject said because his head would shake back and forth quickly (lack of neck muscle because 3 year old)+('absorbing' the movement of the brain inside so brain swelling less likely). much like when you shake someone and their head bounces forward and backwards
