Author Topic: What is your terminal fear?  (Read 2497 times)

By terminal fear, I mean the thing or things that if it happened, you would lose your sanity.  Do you have one?  If so, what is it?

I'll start.  Probably complete rejection—not just a few people.  What I mean is literally everyone in my life regarding me as having no value.  Having no one to talk with, and having no one to connect with.  It's a disturbing fear.

All or most of my family members dying relatively around the same time (time of year/month/days)

Animal attacks.

I could deal with falling out of a plane. I've handled rejection before. I can deal with some moron waving a knife at me.

But loving animals.

Animal attacks > falling out of a plane

Falling out of a plane means you're pretty much done at that point, so you might as well enjoy the air time and accept that your life is over. Maybe even send a text to a loved one with your passwords and location of the will or some stuff.

You probably won't immediately die from an animal attack. They're loving brutal, relentless and they all have unique ways of killing you off. Snakes and spiders do their best Solid Snake impressions, and they're a loving nightmare to remove from the house. Don't get me started on dogs or other animals. Even Kangaroos get violent if you're not careful.

Like how instead of killing you, bears just start eating you once they get to you? :)

Losing complete control of my life.

I know exactly what you mean. The wildlife can just be so terrifying, and all it takes is one of them to snap at the wrong moment, or for you to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you can face serious injury.

Like, I don't even like standing under trees, because the squirrels can drop acorns.
And the robins fly really close to your head sometimes, and then there's all the badgers out there underneath your sheds.

Airplanes, and elevators, they scare the crap out of me sometimes.  This one time, I guess the elevator was old, but it moved to the side a little and made a screeching noise, I was freaking out.  Another time, on an airplane, we went above a storm and the plane felt like it was crashing or some stuff, and the pilots apparently felt nervous because they were reassuring us that everything was fine over and over again, it was NOT fun.

It scares the living daylights out of you! You think you are going to die!

The incident happened a couple of years ago.

I was seated just behind the first embarkation/disembarkation door on a 747-300. This was a window seat. The plane was relatively void of passengers, as this was a flight that had been delayed by more than 6 hours. So a lot of passengers had moved to other flights/airlines.

It was a rainy day, with thunder and lightning at the distance. Just as we had rotated (i.e., wheels up), and the aircraft continued its turbulent and shaky climb, I was peering out of the window, and saw that the thunder / lightning that seemed so far away, wasn't so far, I saw a few lightning strikes hit the field around the airport, and just then without warning....

I heard the loudest BANG! I had ever heard, accompanied with a very bright White light. I almost crapped out in my pants.

There is no shame in admitting. I jumped in my seat (as much as I could, since I was wearing a seatbelt) and screamed. Loudly! And just like when someone spooks you, you cross your arms and veer away! I did all this and then some!

Remember the aircraft was still climbing and we were about 1 minute into our take-off. I cannot stress enough how loud the sound was.

The entire aircraft seemed to have shook, and then a loud bang again. The lights did not go out (as they were off anyways). It was mid day and all windows shutters were up.

The cabin crew immediately rushed and came to my side of the seat and started peering out of the window gazing at the wings / engines. That's when I saw that Engine #1 was smoking. The next thing I know (was too confused and honestly scared at this point) was that the pilot was now doing a a pretty sharp U-turn and calling out for an emergency landing. The engine noise was loud, I guess with added power being given to them by the pilot to turn the aircraft around.

I'm thinking uh-oh, is this it? Is this how it's going to end? Is this how I will die?

Long story short, we turn around and land. We were deplaned by stairs and that's when I saw it.

The lightning had hit the plane on two areas, one was about 10 feet under my window and about 3-4 rows back and one on the wing. The engine just crapped out, although it was fine (we flew the same aircraft after about 2 hours later). But that horrid slightly blackened mark beneath the window on the aircraft's fuselage - that really scared the stuff out of me.

The entire experience was very scary. I have to give it to the pilot and the cabin crew for being so damn cool and composed during the entire process. Not knowing why we were doing an emergency landing (turns out to be  standard procedure when Engine #1 died out due to lightning strike), and the sharp turn the pilot took and the brace announcement for emergency landing, with the rain and thunder still continuing, was very very scary.

It is one moment in my life when I honestly thought I was going to die.

Nothing is more powerful than the drive of self-preservation. When hungry l, like hungry hungry, you can't just not think about it. The hunger consumes you. It becomes a part of you. It will relentlessly claw at your brain.

OT: Fear of my loved one drowning, me having a chance to save him, but failing and having to live with the guilt of being helpless while someone I loved died the most horrendous death I can think of. One that is not human inflicted anyways, unlike flaying.

Being stuck in black nothingness forever. Can't ever die of old age.

Luckily, that'll never happen.

Probably if I was told I only had one day to live. I feel like I would have so much to do and so little time. I'd call all of the ones I love and make the final moments with my girl the best her and I could have.

I had a dream last night where there was a bear in my backyard. I walked out onto the patio to look at it and ran back inside when it saw me. It then kept trying to get in the house just to find me.

For me, my issue is people watching me, whether physically or virtually.

Calm down, self.
