you see insect glave cannot be upgraded until you max out it's exp by giving it nectar you get from quests and nectar can be multiple kinds of things.
you dont upgrade the weapon itself but the bug

actually the weapon DOES upgrade after enough kinsect level ups

The tutorial is terrible and doesn't teach you anything about the game besides normal attacks. As for the actual hunting, I spent 10 minutes mashing the b button trying to kill this monster, which I never could. It's really boring.
