Author Topic: So, SYRSA showed his game to Vinny from Vinesauce...  (Read 9765 times)

This is actually pretty impressive to be done by one guy and if it's this early in development then there's a good amount of potential here.

He doesn't know a lick of game theory.

Watch this video if you want an "explanation" on the huge tits.

His actual art style seems okay, but god that in game model is blech. And the actual lore seems... okay. But the gainaxing is still attrocious.

Also he seems pretty auts.

He doesn't know a lick of game theory.

Stop. Any kind of school taught theory should be used as a tool but is 0% necessary. This goes for any type of art. Music theory, for example, is a useful tool for writing music because you understand fundamentals of the composition and it can help you add to a song if you're stuck. But in no way is it necessary to write great music. It important to be able to play and write by ear. So brown townogously, it should be important to be able to make a game by feel.

You're loving with me, right?

If you don't understand why good games are great and why bad games are stuff, how can you hope in hell to make a good game? Feel is not enough, because 90% of the elements that make a good game are not consciously noticed by players. You have to be taught and understand the logic behind why certain elements of the video game work and don't work.

This guy clearly doesn't understand feedback loops, gameplay mechanic specifics such as skill chains and player teaching (giving the players an understanding of the game's controls and mechanics without relying on text or videos), and he's very focused on the art and music side. Those things are great, but it's clear he's got no direction as far as how the GAME part of the game actually works.

That's the same as saying a musician who's been playing for 2 years can't make music. Sure, it may have some decent qualities, but they can't consolidate their ideas into something that's really great. Because it's about experience, not theory. You use what you have learned over years of practice and application to make something great. He's a one man loving team, he will eventually get it considering what he has so far. Experience also comes from what you've played as well. Knowing what you enjoy and don't, so you can use that information on your own material. You don't need schooling for this. You can look at any indie developer that's put hard work into their game that hasn't a "lick of theory" behind their belt from schooling that is still successful. ITS A TOOL, not a CRUTCH.

My god you are so loving douchy when it comes to the topic of games/game design. You pretend to be the smartest loving person on this forum when it comes to games, so much so that your pretty much the Port of game design.

Either learn to be less of an starfish when you discuss game design or keep away from said topics.

Id also like to add (for the sake of arguing in this game in particular) that he isn't selling this game, and that the development and creation of this game was purely for his own sake. The fact that people like it and support it is a byproduct of good, hard work, and I'm sure he appreciates it very much. Just like any other form of GOOD art, its done for yourself, not others.

oh my godi  remember this guy. he used to make a bunch of animations on one of his older channels. he used a robot as his avatar and stuff.

You know it occurs to me that half your un-credited argument seems to be half assed and pulled from that back of the brain on this one.
Stop trying to be god at game design when it doesn't even sound right.
Its the equivalent of that reporter who interviewed that guy who said he ate "activated almonds" to sound smart in front of public, when he's clearly an idiot for trying so hard.

I just think he needs to take critique better. He totally flips stuff whenever someone does.

Like he does great, but the very fact that he gets defensive, like he says in the video, wont get him any support that hey may need in the future on his game.

Someone mentioned he's the next Phil Fish

An artist who studied music theory and has been playing for 2 years will be better than an artist who just plays music for 2 years. Theory is under-appreciated since all too many people care only about the physical skills involved, and give no stuffs about why people enjoy music or games.

Verdi and Mozart didn't just start throwing random notes together until their stuff sounded good. They learned and understood why music inspires people, and so they played to those strengths.

You need to have both physical skill and theoretical understanding to make the best works. I am sick and tired of people thinking that because they play games and because they have a copy of Unity that they can make a good game.

Knowing what you enjoy and don't, so you can use that information on your own material. You don't need schooling for this. You can look at any indie developer that's put hard work into their game that hasn't a "lick of theory" behind their belt from schooling that is still successful.
Where do you think the theories came from? Those guys compared what they did differently and talked about it. The reason Jonathan Blow is so damn good and popular is because he understands exactly what the forget is going on in his games, and he speaks to the public about the theory of game design and the process as well.

You don't need schooling, but it loving helps if you do some level of research before you attempt to make an original concept.

ITS A TOOL, not a CRUTCH.
loving lol.

I don't pretend. I'm not the smartest, and I never said I was. I point out exactly what I think at any given time. I'm brutally honest. Maybe you dislike me because you don't like hearing a different opinion to your own.

He apparently spent years writing the backstory. Maybe he could have spent that time studying how to make a better video game. There's a difference between art and making something for yourself.

The guy sounds way too whiny to me. His idea of "game design" seems to have no intention at all.

Also, as he mentioned in the video, he made the game so that females had to provide milk to all humans. While an interesting idea, it's completely useless for a game environment. "Oh look at me, I'm being artistic because I added boobies!" To me, that's just lazy. It's tipping over the line to look edgy, which in my opinion, is completely unnecessary.

The game design looks lazy too. "You do nothing, that's like real life." But that's not what makes a game fun. You might say you added story, but the problem is - how do you develop story when there's no gameplay to develop it with? The guy just looks like he's taking it a tad far to justify already dead arguments.

Overall, however, it looks okay as a game. Nothing I'd want to play, but it needs some serious work before it's anywhere near good. I also don't think that people need to bash it a ton - where McJob isn't, the bigger problem is the backlash to the general criticism - but I wouldn't say that it deserves any title higher than "okay".
