Author Topic: i plan on learning game development, i have an idea on what i'm doing  (Read 1454 times)

i need an engine recommendation for my idea.

so, before anyone instantly says "ewww gay kiddo ideas xDDD" i just want to let you know i'm using this as a learning opportunity for me. i have little money to spend, but anything will work for me. i still have my mturk emone :P

i plan on producing an arcade-style game. something like a wave shooter would fit my style best. i plan on making it completely round based. players earn coins based on how many opponents they slaughtered. 25 enemies would be equal to one coin, coins would be awarded at the end of the round. players use the coins to buy upgrades, and especially upgrade their "world" ability. the world ability represents a change in levels. 4 coins is enough to jump to the second level, for example. each other level costs 4 more coins, i.e. from 2-3 is 8 coins. you can also jump back levels, if you feel it's getting too hard. at the end of level 4, or the last level, they fight a boss which deposits coins into their perma accounts (you'll hear about this more) based on how long they've lived, or if they've succeeded (he's supposed to be super loving hard) they gain 20 coins and proceed to the arena, where they mercilessly fight off enemies until they die. when they die, all the coins they've earned are added to their permanent account, which they can use to buy perma upgrades. then, it repeats its cycle.

rating of my idea? recommendations for an engine?
i plan for it to be more of a mental work-out for me, rather than anything else.

Unity Free is a perfect start up. Don't use Java or Boo though. Go straight to C#.

What programming languages do you know?

i'm focusing on learning Java or BASIC right now.

i mean i will def focus on more, but really...

Don't learn Java it's a waste.

2D Engines:
cocos2D
Gamemaker

3D Engines:
Ultimate 3D
Unity
Unreal Tournament's engine
ShiVa

BASIC? Didn't BASIC die with FORTH?

You gravely underestimate the power of Unity's 2D function.

I think a good start point would be to get yourself to a maturity point where you can exist in a Twiddla meeting for more than 3 seconds without spamming it to death.

My recommendation for your project is Gamemaker 8. It's not free but nothing good ever is. If you know some Java you'll be pretty set.

Too bad, I'm almost finished with my lesson.

I don't plan on having any other staff, as I said, this is much more of an experiment for me.

it was a joke about how poor your online behavior is

Tbh only 3 engines are worth working with, Unity, Unreal, and Source. Coding languages should be C#, C++ and a little Lua. Java is dead and loving sloppy as forget.
But whatever, I've made my point from a professional stand-point, take it or leave it, and suit yourself.

Don't learn Java it's a waste.
I feel like Java for game dev has jumped from "no one wants to" to "everyone wants to" because of Minecraft :v
It's really not worth it for game dev

And the only BASIC worth learning for more than very basic intro is VB.NET

Too bad, I'm almost finished with my lesson.
Switching to another language is nothing.
Learning programming is like 1% the language, and 99% mindset, , learning the concepts, knowing good practices, critical thinking skills, etc. Learning another language is just learning it's syntax (which Java is very similiar to many others), and different languages are good for different things.

Exactly, and Notch has repeatedly said that he regrets it a lot.

I don't want this to turn into a fight, quite frankly I'm a bit confused about how my behavior on the web is poor.

I started learning Java for web development especially. I'm thinking of starting to learn some C#. Mind giving me some good resources?

torque
maybe java or something
