Author Topic: what color is this dress - MYSTERY SOLVED ITS BLUE AND BLACK SEE LAST POST  (Read 15098 times)

no it depends on what colour the ambient light is

if you have a yellowish light on a reflective surface it will have a yellowish tint where it reflects

makes no sense because the dress is in the shadow
if the light's yellowish, that casts the dress in a blue shadow (since it's facing away)
again, meaning it's white and gold with bad lighting

this is so loving trippy i thought everyone was trolling but then i saw it and wtf

it's very clearly not in perfect shadow since there is a significant portion of it that's highly lit

if it were dimly lit enough to where white could appear blue you wouldn't observe this either

also observe the massive glare coming from other portions of the image

not really
since the light's glare is behind the dress (top right) we know it's in shadow
it's fairly obvious it's in shadow to me

you'd observe that white -> blue, gold -> brown

also observe the massive glare coming from other portions of the image
which is precisely how we know that the dress is in shadow

some of the glare appears to also be coming from a mirror, meaning the light source is behind the camera person

does it?

does it?
no

it's still pretty hard to believe that in such a brightly-lit environment where light is clearly hitting the centre of the surface that there is enough dimness to make such a significant change in colour to where it appears /that/ blue

IT'S forgetIN
BLUE AND BLACK OK stuff

YOU OVERCONTRASTED AN OVERCONTRASTED PHOTO

when someone brought this up to me i looked at it and called it black and blue. i opened the image about 8 times after that, each time in a webpage, and several more times in image editors to pick out individual colors, and then even watched it through a screenshare on someone elses' computer who claimed the dress was white and gold. the image always appeared black and blue to me.
then i went and watched something else for an hour, and completely forgot about this image.
then i checked this thread again. all 15 pages. the dress is white and gold in every single place and i'm just kind of flipping stuff but i also feel like it has to do with the way you interpret the lighting of the image from the first time you see it after a while.

before anyone takes a side and says "this couldn't possibly be this way" take a break, do something else, and just try to think about something else for a while. then come back to the thread next time you're lookin around the forums. keep doing that until the color changes for you, it probably will.
