im stuck on fourside in earthbound
using a guide has no luck since ive confused myself on where im at

i havent finished half-life 1, quake, doom, any fallout, or mirrors edge
I beat the entire Earthbound game but I used IGN's guide but not on everyplace some I did by my self a lot. So basically I beat it using my way and a guide

i used to use guides routinely until i realized that i actually have less trouble not following guides

like i recently went through earthbound without using a guide and just going 'oh, okay, let's just do this' and the instant i thought i was getting up to a really hard spot (magicant and the mani-mani statue, in particular) i decided to look up what i was getting into

that got me killed 4 times

the instant i put down the guide i killed that forgeter with almost full health in like 8 turns

i have never beaten a pokemon game before, despite owning 4 of the games

I turn god-mode on when I play Skyrim.

I don't like dying in video games.

I was not able to beat the Cat-in-the-Hat game by myself, same goes for Pacman World 2.

My dad beat those for me when I was little.

Most of my childhood consists of movie tie-ins.

I beat it and I only used a guide on the last level
That one took me months of giving up and crying

first game i ever 100% was Battlefield 3.

I have another confession to make.
I do use guides, but mostly for 100%ing the game if I'm truly stumped on progress. It's mostly to save time, but I feel so guilty when I do.

I was scared out of my mind by the enemies on the PS1 game, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (1999). I would always just stand somewhere out of their NPC detection range and watch them while I would screw around walking in circles or flying over obstacles wherever I was. If I accidentally landed somewhere causing an enemy to react, I would immediately struggle to get back to my safe haven. If an enemy managed to deal damage to me, my heart would be racing beyond 120bpm and I would usually scramble to pause the game and shut off the console. I don't remember when I conquered my fear (9 or 10 years old?), but I've beaten all the levels I've played.

On driving games with police cars where the cops would either pull you over, arrest you, or wreck your car, I would always use cheats to disable pursuits and/or remove their cars altogether (exception on the 1994-6 PS1 game, Road & Track's Need For Speed, since the police were usually of no bother). On Driver (as well as Driver 2), I refused to complete story mode because it was too easy without cops and too "hard" with cops.

On Sled Storm (PS1) and Road & Track's Need For Speed (PS1), I was scared of the pixellated 2D structures used to simulate wildlife (bears and moose respectively) because I thought they would run into the road causing an accident and/or chase me and try to get me.

I was scared of playing FPS games involving firearms (and banned from playing them anyway) until I was 11 or 12 years old because I thought the blood would be scary (only when very little, after watching my dad play them this became obsolete) and that the guns would be too loud in comparison to the volume. I thought I would put it on the wrong volume and then firing the gun would be insanely loud.

the instant i put down the guide i killed that forgeter with almost full health in like 8 turns

guides for dark souls 1 murdered me, especially when they emphasize how "easy" said bosses are

only when I discovered mechanics and learned from mistakes did I ever make any progress

not from some silly guides

also in elder scrolls oblivion I always had a phobia of traveling alone in spooky places despite having a lvl 30 dark elf w/ 60 second instant invisibility
cue grandmaster thief quest
I took the adoring fan to that place, and he never made it out alive

whenever I was alone @ lower lvls, I used the ancestor's guardian racial thing so I didn't feel alone lol
like to ridiculous efforts; sometimes terrified enough to wait an entire 24 hours just to summon it for 60 seconds

I do this quite frequently, like in the Batman games, Psychonauts or Brutal Legend, but only if I've exhausted as much effort as I'm willing to find the collectibles, and I don't want to wait until later to come back.

I don't necessarily think it's something to be embarrassed by. Collectibles can be really loving hard to find, and I think many developers use the collectibles to encourage communities to come together to find them and discuss.

i never played runescape
i didnt really care for LoZ
i never played pokemon

I turn god-mode on when I play Skyrim.

maybe you should try some of the mods that let you "die" but you just kind of spawn somewhere else?
