"We can't do anything about them reaching the city, but they'll probably slow down once they have their target, so we have to shoot them down then."

Ellie continues following Tempest, her attention is momentarily drawn to her radar screen, showing Markus changing his heading towards the Shikra.

You're kidding, right? There's no way he'll even catch up now, I guess my earlier statement didn't get through.
fixed.

Lorens climbs back up and swings around, this time setting his sights on the runway. He makes another run, this time opting to do some level bombing. He sets a CCRP at one end of the runway and tweaks the ripple timer to spread out the bomb release. He aligns the A-10's course with the runway heading and holds down the weapons release button as he comes up on the release point. Like clockwork, the bombs drop one by one from their pylons until all four are expended.

Tippy heads for AWACS to reload
You rendezvous with the AWACS.

"forget! If that lead Shikra makes it to the city, it could do a lot of damage. Is anyone in range? Anyone?" Gus double-checks his ordnance and lines up on Shikra-2, white-knuckling the stick.
You are now in missile range of Shikra-2, and right on its tail (it's been traveling in a straight line so far, so no test was needed).

The bombs turn the midsection of the runway into an unusable moonscape, preventing further takeoffs. Coaxoch follows up your bombing run on the primary runway with a rocket barrage on the secondary, while her squadmates begin strafing exposed support vehicles.

"AWACs, are there any other friendlies in the area? Any ground defenses between me and the city? There's no way I'm gonna catch this other Shikra."

Markus, unsure of what to do, loiters above the airfield.

You take up position above the airfield, but from the looks of things there won't be any planes taking off anytime soon.

All three heatseekers hit it square in the rear, along with a good amount of your laserfire. The damaged engine explodes, and the Shikra starts rolling out of control, firing wildly until it crashes into a (fortunately almost entirely abandoned) 4-lane thoroughfare on the outskirts of the city.

: Negative, but Civil Protection has been notified and they're doing all they can to get civilians to shelter. As grim as it sounds, your best bet is to follow it until it begins its attack. Maybe you'll have an opportunity then.
: My guess is he will strike that obscene slab of a corporate building. It is the most visible target to the city, easiest way to spook the people. And if it were to come down...
: There's no way he could bring it down that fast. Is there?
: There is no way he would be able to destroy it in one run. Not with the ordnance these rebels had available. Not even if he flew into it. But you can bet he will keep trying until it does.

Much of the base is still standing, only the runways and a handful of hangars have been knocked out. Things like the barracks, control tower, headquarters, guard posts, 80% of the hangars, etc, are still operational.

Markus starts strafing the hangars, lining up each one individually and blind-firing an HSM at one of them after lining up.

Then he wonders why he brought flak.

"Nice kill, Tempest!"

Ellie keeps her heading towards the city.

Then he wonders why he brought flak.
to eviscerate groups of lowly footsloggers as they run for cover

"So be it, Watch your strafing runs on the base and take note of my position."

Walt heads into the base and slows down to a stationary position, converting to vertical flight.

"I've been waiting to use these guns properly"

Walt scans over the base from his position and slowly orients his aircraft towards the Control tower.

ah

The AWACs' last statememt reminds Gus of the mission they took before the air base.

He hopes with all his soul that Shikra has only conventional ordnance.
