Ellie looks around for Markus so they can have that aerial duel.

Jalko and Talko are appeased and Talko can be heard grumbling in bliss of ear scritches.

Jaakko continues doing not much of anything.

mission soon™
A few days go by and word of the previous engagement gets out, resulting in Gus receiving a letter from Arkadi Nikitin thanking him for protecting his company's assets, as well as getting a medal and a promotion. Kommandant and Virvel catch up to him as he's returning from receiving the latter two.
: Congrats on the promotion, Captain. I can't believe it took 'em that long to get around to it.
: I've been doing my homework on your squadron's history, and I'm honestly shocked. Over a dozen kills over half as many engagements in the past year alone, staying behind to defend a Mercanan convoy by yourself and succeeding, being one of only three planes to survive Tlacelel's onslaught, and until today you were just a Lieutenant? If I were calling the shots, I'd have bumped you up to Major and put you in charge instead of Kirves a long time ago.

(As for where the other NPCs are; Pansar and Coaxoch are in the gym, Frisk and Eremit are in the hangars, and the robot is walking the dogs.)

Gus addresses Virvel.

"Yeah, thanks."

He pushes past Kommandant, giving the Kyle Augustine-looking motherforgeter a 0°K glare reserved only for those that incur the wrath of Luigi in a Go-Kart.

After returning to his room for a change out of his ceremonial attire, Gus heads to the gym.

and so the first action gus (an almost 30 year old man) takes after receiving a promotion is to act like a bratty teenager, nice

Anyway, he's now in the gym. It's not any more busy than usual, but a lot of the people present seem to be focusing more on the strange foreigner at the pull-up bar than their own routines.
: Again, I do not carry my trophies with me at all times. That would be impractical, I have far too many.
: I still can't believe you're allowed to take them! In this country we aren't even allowed to take so much as an ear anymore.
: Well, your country is not in a state of complete anarchy right now. A fair trade, I would say.

what would you expect when the leader of another squad badmouths your own squad leader that you hold in very high regard behind his back as some sort of congratulations for you

that wasn't a I'm better than everyone you filthy plebian "yeah, thanks", it was a please stop talking to me you're making me uncomfortable "yeah, thanks"

Gus observes the conversation and crowd near Coaxoch while taping his hands.

That would be impractical, I have far too many.
kissinger among them

Yui heads to the gym.
"Hey, Gus."

Walt Tinkers on his aircraft, cleaning it up so he can see all the damage he has absorbed clearly next time.

what would you expect when the leader of another squad badmouths your own squad leader that you hold in very high regard
first off, he's simply saying gus is better suited for command than jaakko is (and i mean, he's not far wrong, gus remains a lot more calm during stress, whereas jaakko degenerates into a panicky mess), and if gus really respected his squad leader i'd expect him to confront the person about it instead of pouting and going away without saying a word, like the nonverbal version of "o-okay". i mean, that doesn't solve anything, gus isn't going to change someone's mind no matter how hard he glares, unless he's changing the opinion of "gus is a pretty cool guy" to "oh wait actually he's a punk".

also, people holding jaakko in very high regard? tippy openly mocks him to his face, his dogs don't even listen to him, and i can't even remember the last time gus said a single positive thing about him, so that's news to me.

Faw just sorta floats around Valhalla Base before settling down in the Recreation Room in front of the TV.

instead of instigating a conflict, gus just glared at him and left - I figured that was a better way of saying "I don't appreciate your views on jaakko" than turning into macho man "close ur mouth or I'll close it 4 u". It wasn't meant to change his views on jaakko or himself, just to tell kommandant that he shouldn't talk Jaakko down around him

gus holds jaakko in high regard because he was a survivor of the airbase incident and stayed on the field without bailing when he very well could have, stealth plane and all. tragedy brings people together, you know, and gus has more in common with him than Darth malak Tippy or walt

The show currently on, not that anyone was watching it, is an instructional painting show featuring a soft-spoken host.

didn't need to be super macho or start a physical confrontation, it could have been as simple as "why do you say that?"
then he'd explain why he thinks jaakko is unfit for command, and gus could explain why he thinks he fits just fine, and then they both leave with new perspectives

dat framerate tho
