Valve's SteamVR headset has been blown wide open, ahead of its appearance at the Game Developers Conference next week. It's named Vive, HTC are making it (yes, HTC), and it boasts two 1200x1080 displays that refresh at 90 frames per second. This, according to HTC, allows the device to "[fill] your field of vision in all directions, eliminating the jitter common to previous VR technologies".

I have a friend that owns the rift DK1.

Well. This means ill probably be getting this over the Oculus rift.

Same. IMO Valve > Facebook. (Not sure about HTC > Oculus, but HTC has been in the business longer right?)

the dev kit comes out a bit earlier than when the oculus rift is expected to come out. i'm expecting a slew of comparison videos in the future.

I hope not, because Dev kit =/= Release kit. You don't compare Alpha to Release.
But the videos are going to be there anyways.

Supposedly its pretty much done.

maybe
there's still a chance source 2 will come out with it

Honestly if Valve us working on this with HTC, I wouldnt be surprised if they made a game to go with it for promotion purposes.

the dev kit won't be an alpha release. the full thing comes out at the end of the year.

Just need the google cardboard cutout for my phone and I'm dandy.

Bumping this a bit to say that my friend has an oculus rift dk2. It's pretty awesome but it needs à higher resolution screen.
