Author Topic: Why does daylight savings time even exist now?  (Read 2206 times)

Seriously, it has no use anymore. It just annoys the crap out of people.

I usually wake up at around 7:20 AM, I woke up at 8:22 AM. Why? Because I didn't realize that daylight savings started YESTERDAY. Now I'm not going to school because of it.

Post your stufftiest daylight savings forget ups.

I don't even know what it is

I don't go to sleep until 3am anyways so I always see the jump form 1 to 3am.

You went all day Sunday without remembering to change your alarm?

I live in Arizona suck on that one.

Funny thing is, I saw that the computer's time was one hour ahead of my watch and I thought that my watch's time got messed up somehow, so I also put it one hour ahead. The alarm was set for 7:15 and I still woke up at 8:22. I probably would've slept earlier if I knew that it was daylight savings.

Just use UTC
I'm not sure his school would take "I use UTC" as an excuse for being an hour late every day

At work we have a thing that monitors some of our processes and sends an email to all developers is something is taking way too long

Something wasn't set up right to account for DST so it was thinking everything is taking an hour longer than it actually is, so I've been getting emails every 15 minutes since early yesterday morning

His school is dumb

Just use sunlight

Daylight saving is basically that. During the summer, the time is taken back an hour to use the extra time of daylight to avoid illumination costs which are pretty high. During the winter, it's advanced an hour to save the daylight time which is less than in the summer, again, to avoid illumination costs. Some countries don't respect it for various reasons. Argentina, for example, because it was a mess and no one organized themselves making a stuffload of problems. IIRC, some parts of Japan also don't follow it.

why do we call the timezone GMT-whatever when daylight savings take up 2/3s of the year and we're usually in GMT-(whatever -1)

GMT master race

But GMT still shifts between GMT and BST depending on DST? UTC is independent of timezones or when during the year it is.
