Author Topic: Decent military strategy games that won't beat the stuff out of my computer?  (Read 3802 times)

I'm looking for fun omniscient military strategy games. Games where you can command armies and stuff like that. I can't run Arma or anything like that, so it shouldn't be too shiny or anything. Maybe some stuff like Total War. It can be online or on Steam or something like that. I don't really care. Any suggestions?

The Humble Origin Bundle has Command and Conquer Generals with the Total War expansion for $1.
Alternatively, for $20 you can get Rise of Nations: Extended Edition.
Rise of Nations Gold is one of my favorite RTS's ever, and from what I've heard, this updated version is even better.

C&CG is $1 (and you get a few other games). From what I've played, matches can be around 30 minutes to an hour long, though it may be long if you're fighting AI. You also start right off in the modern day. You will also need a workaround to play online multiplayer.
Rise of Nations is a bit more long term, and is also more expensive. In RoN, you work your nation up from the ancient ages to our modern age - and the future. There is a lot more management at hand, such as resources, tech trees, diplomacy, etc. The steam version is also updated so it doesn't rely on gamespy, and it has ranked multiplayer matches. You'll also be able to manage larger armies than in C&CG. There's also a singleplayer campaign that's similar to Risk, but in real time.

Overall, it's all up to preference and what you're looking for. C&CG is a bit more of a military strategy game than RoN, but you don't have to go through all of the ages in RoN. You can start in any age you want, so if you choose the information age, you'll be able to have modern military right off the bat.

xcom enemy unknown is pretty cool but its not quite an army

making history series is on sale on steam right now until april 27th

it's got two iterations of ww2 and one iteration of ww1

Are you into RTS games at all? I may have a good suggestion.

well, i can suggest Hearts of Iron III, II, or Darkest Hour, but III can be pretty hard to learn and DH has other aspects in it. All three have you control a nation, so idk if you'd like that. also the troop movement can take up a bit of memory, III needs all three expansions to be more of a fun game.

RTS?

Wargame's pretty fun.

Real Time Strategy

Also if you're looking for an FPS multiplayer game where you can play as a soldier you should look at Heroes and Generals, its on steam.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun.

an oldie, but a goodie; they let it go for free but i'm not sure if it works

its really good, not at all like total war though sorry. it's all RTS and is really fun, but be warned

also, the normal, vanilla game (which is only $10) on standalone is a lot more downgraded than the their finest hour DLC. at least, that's what i've heard

If you're looking for manageable base-building RTS with not entirely huge armies...
The Humble Origin Bundle has Command and Conquer Generals with the Total War Zero Hour expansion for $1.

Otherwise, if you're thinking about Total War-esque games, consider games like Crusader Kings II or Europa Universalis IV, or the older Total War games (Medieval II, Rome 1) if your computer is weak.  If your computer doesn't suck go for the newer TW games, especially Rome II or Attila if you're new because they loving hold your hand when you first play.
