Author Topic: Controllers for PC  (Read 3572 times)

I'm not dodging anything, I answered the question honestly and accurately.

I use a controller whenever I can. Can't aim for stuff with a mouse + keyboard. It all comes down to preference. I'm sure someone with a controller can shoot just as straight as someone with a mouse, with the same amount of practice. It's all about what you're used to really.

Why do most PC games not let drive with a mouse? I hate using WASD half the time.

and I'll tell you why your answer is avoiding the question.
It's impossible to have "mastered" the game. There will always be someone better than you if that person practices more than you or you slip up. Let's assume they all practiced thier asses off as much as physically possible. Exact same amount of practice. This is because we need to get rid of anything relating to stuff like emotions, time scedules, and even just plain ol' dedication to reveal the true result of which is better for FPS's, because overall it'll all be the same. The answer comes fundamentally down to "Does keyboard+mouse have any fundamental advantages over controller for this type of game" and the answer is yes.

Because controllers are stuff for shooters, that's why they have lock on and other dumb stuff so you think your good but your not.

I said "mastered more", which I implied to be a measure of skill at the game. And, if these really are the best, then no, nobody is better than you.

Now, I somewhat agree with you here. Initially, yes. K+M does provide an accuracy bonus. However, after meaningful practice, you can match that bonus with a controller, as you have gotten accustomed to the mechanics of the game and the controller, to the point where it does not really matter which tool you use.

fresh 360 pads are good, but if you can get a controller from the bone

that same accuracy can be achieved with a controller. Just look at my BF4 stats.
haha, no, not even with all the aim assist console babbies get

no clue, GTAV has introduced me to the concept and it's really nice, i hope more games use it

You know that's optional, right? I have it off because it interferes with my sniping by making it harder to compensate for moving targets.

Arma has it and that's where I learned to use it over WASD
GTA SA  also had it but it was a extremely sensitive, it was like your mouse was made of clitoris' and moving it just a tiny bit would send it off into space..

It's not just an accuracy bonus, it's a speed bonus as well. With enough practice, you can almost instantly get your crosshair pretty much anywhere on the screen. However of course, if you turn up the speed on your controller you can do that as well. However, comparatively, it's much harder to do on a console accurately.

Let's model this difficulty with some math equations. The equations here will be of the form (a + 1 * x) / (x + 1)
Basically this graph will represent how close to fully mastering the game you are, with 0 being incredibly crappy to 1 being you'll never be beaten by anyone ever. a represents the initial amount of advantage that the control method gives. As x gets higher and higher it will get ever closer to 1. And, theoretically, if you could practice infinitely, for any given value of a you'd reach one.

Let's say the keyboard+mouse gives an initial advantage of 0.5 and the controller an initial advantage of 0.

The upper line is the keyboard+mouse, and the lower one is controller. Now, no matter how far along you go on the graph, there will always be a gap between the two lines. This can be proven as follows. Let's say there was a point at which the two graphs intersect, that would satisfy the equation (x + 0.5) / (x + 1) = (x + 0) / (x + 1)
Multiply both sides by (x + 1) and you get x + 0.5 = x + 0. These line graphs are parallel. They will never intersect.

THEREFORE. No matter how much you practice on controller, as long as the people on PC practice just as much, you will never be better than them, no matter how small the difference.

(Sidenote: As long as the value of a for keyboard+mouse is higher than the value of a for controller, this holds true.)

That's the point, if they really were the best, the apparatus would not matter. It's whoever has mastered the game more.

first person shooters are not fighting games, sorry

I dunno man, it felt like ASS in borderlands

then again borderlands was a stuffty port

You know that's optional, right? I have it off because it interferes with my sniping by making it harder to compensate for moving targets.
okay, good for you?
it's not always optional, for that matter, depending on the game

first person shooters are not fighting games, sorry
if i can play uniel with a guitar hero guitar that means i can play cod with a guitar hero guitar right

Yeah but the cars in borderlands just drove like ass anyway

Also skill in FPS games has now boiled down to how twitchy you are while playing

if i can play uniel with a guitar hero guitar that means i can play cod with a guitar hero guitar right
yo real talk back in like 2008 I was over at a friend's house and we were trying to play halo 3 splitscreen with rock band stuff
don't remember how the drums went but for the guitar: the whammy was used to turn, pitching the guitar up and down would look up and down, and twitching it up would shoot.

this sounds really intense; filed away as goofy lan party idea
i've had a thing where i basically made everyone play melty blood with flight sticks, and that was pretty fun, surprisingly doable too
