Author Topic: Running Internet Cable  (Read 1910 times)

Hey!

If any of you know me (which you probably don't), I have really sucky internet. At best, I get 15-20 1-5 mbps. Really sucks. Better yet, it's shared and it goes through a bunch of metal walls before getting to the router. It also has to go through the microwave too, which is terrible. Tablets and laptops really have a sucky time too.

But this week (month), is the day I change that.

I have plans to dig an entire trench that's about 100175 - 275 ft to my router on my own, then my dad and I will drill through drywall and attics to plug ethernet right into that router. (I live with my grandparents.) And then I will get glorious 60 mbps! That might be terrible for you, but it's heaven for me.

Over the next few days or weeks I will update this topic on what's going on. I'll probably take pictures if you guys want.

Just thought it would be cool to post, you guys can also bombard me with your google fibre speeds too.

[insert google fiber speed here]

Update already. I actually wrote this after I got done. I am a wee bit ashamed to say I don't do a lot of working, so after a day my hands are sore, shaky, and blistered!

I've gotten about 40-60 feet dug, about 4-6 inches. It's relatively straight, I will be going in and smoothing it out, making it deeper, and other stuff. Also, inconveniently the trench runs right through multiple fat roots. How fun.

op edit:

the trench is actually 150-275 feet long I think.

what

that's best. I'm sure I get lower on other days.

why is that confusing though?

15-20 mbps is pretty average
not "really sucky" at all

also are you trying to share internet  between multiple houses or what

because 15-20 mb/s is good

Well, I live on my grandparent's property, in a metal-like house. I share it between 5 people. My grandparents stream TV, and my parents microwave, do ftp work (my dad), and watch videos.

Hmm. Yeah I would think it's pretty average. I just hate getting kicked out of games when my internet fails or is too low.

Massive bump.

Apparently I was wrong about my internet. It really plummeted last time I checked.

I actually have (AT BEST WHICH IS RARELY,) 1.5 mbps. A few days ago I could barely get 0.15 mbps. Really sucks.

There has been a lot of progress on the trench! Some parts are about 6-8 inches deep now. I'm taking a detour from the original route because there were way too many roots from a gigantic tree to dig under or around.

I've also gotten the rototiller out and it's making it a lot easier to dig. Progress is going a bit slow because of school of course, it should get done a lot faster after school is out.

Can't wait to get that 60 mbps upgrade from my 1.5 mbps.

At best, I get 15-20 mbps.
my download speed averages 90 kilobytes per second, bucko

I get 5mb at best.

Usually it's 1-2 mbPs and usually steam downloads games at 125kbps

0.15 Mb/s is 18.75 KB/s

mine is pretty okay for the first little bit of the month, until our limit runs out

but i cant play any online games cus of that big number on the right
and after we pass the limit i can't even use speedtest.net

IMO 15 MBps is really fast. My previous internet used to be 2Mbps download speed though but that wasnt too bad really. Ping was and has remained great though.

Quit complaining.
