I don't like the idea of giving a 10 year old an abortion, but in this situation I think it would be necessary

damn u paraguaynians(..?)

That's ridiculous. I have nothing against abortion, personally. The government isn't the one having the baby, it is the individual. Abortion cannot harm anyone, beside an organism that is not living yet. I see no reason why it shouldn't be legal.

I imagine the Paraguay govt being like

"y'know, abortion is completely outright immoral, no we have to put a 10 year old child through labor in childbirth in this country"

But really, that's forgeted up.

everybody's gotta remember

women's bodies have ways of dealing with legitimate rapes

yeah seriously like
which is more immoral: putting a 10-year-old child through pregnancy and labor/caesarean section or letting her get an abortion

this is what happens when extremely fundamentalist catholics dominate 90% of your country's population

um so i don't get into abortion discussions very often...

is this a piece of ridiculousness that is actually a prevalent argument against abortion... i don't want to like step on any toes or w/e but if this is a thing i'm going to be very disappointed

i've heard the term "legitimate rape" but i guess i never really understood what it referred to

Nah, I'm of the opinion that a lot of the prevalent arguments against abortion are pretty dumb. However, that little nugget of ridiculousness comes from former US representative Todd Akin. I think he even lost support within groups of fundamentalist voters since there's very few people who can overlook a comment that stupid.

Even worse is that he's remarked on that backlash as being the willful misinterpretation of what he said here:

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,”

on the part of his critics. I only have to give him credit that it takes balls to say something that stupid and then pin it on everyone else.

I think it's almost worse that the prevalent view is that women should be legally barred from pursuing an abortion due to other people's belief in the 'soul' of a fetus. It's literally just people who want to shamelessly violate the 1st amendment.

Pretty heavy stuff to get raped that young, then get pregnant at a young age. I'd imagine an abortion would further complicate things mentally for her.

I find that pretty unconvincing considering that abortions are relatively simple procedures in the early stages of pregnancy, and having a kid at such a young age is almost definitely more traumatizing. Not to mention that with Paraguan-tier medical care, there's a pretty decent chance she'll die in labor.

i'm sure there are complications for childbirth at such a young age.
