sonic is dead lol. now that i think about it, there have barely been any good sonic games.
sonic boom is not canon to the main sonic series if i recall correctly. sega probably handed the project off to another shady company like big red button, while sega themselves are probably working on mobile ports, mobile games, or a new console game

sonic boom is on a separate canon/timeline
if you went by the comic canon, Sonic X Sonic Boom could happen
but sonic would have to be 100+ years old

wasn't really talking about whether it was canon or not...all i'm saying is that it's been a long time since sega has consistently produced good, ACTUALLY good sonic games and i'm not sure if it ever happened at all now that i'm thinking about it

Sad, but true.

Now I'll say Sonic doesn't have the best track record, but there have been some pretty good sonic games over the years. Now I'm pretty sure people would definitely disagree with me, but yeah.

the problem is there's more bad sonic games than good ones

Which is what I'm saying. Take for example Mario, yeah some might say that Nintendo is milking the franchise, but at least there are quality releases being put out. We can all probably agree Mario has had maybe about 85% of his games being quality releases with the rest being okay or meh at best.

Now Sonic? forget the ratio is terrible. In my opinion I can say out of every Sonic game released so far there's probably about maybe 15% of his games worth playing and that's me being generous.

the problem is that sonic tries too hard to experiment. mario, in terms of it's basic fundamentals, hasn't changed at all since the first one on the NES, and look at how successful and consistent the mario franchise is

but sonic tries to add loads of new things that drastically affect gameplay, including, but not limited to:

a dumb werewolf mechanic (unleashed)
a motion control gimmick that barely functions with sonic's playstyle (secret rings)
hub worlds that have nothing of substance and only contain pointless missions that give you the money to buy parts of the game (sonic 06)
the entirety of sonic boom
and other examples I may have missed out.

not saying that sonic should play exactly like he should back in the genesis days, no, there's nothing wrong with freshening up the game experience with some new things. but for now, sega really should just play it safe and stick to the colors/generations formula

how to make a sonic game:

take modern sonic from sonic generations and make a generations-style modern sonic level

do that 11 more times (for a total of 6 zones with 2 stages per

add a boss at the end of every zone

literally do nothing else

be the best modern sonic game released to date

do you know what happens when you mix fire and ice
WATER
YOU GET
WATER
THIS IS LIKE FIRST GRADE STUFF

WATER

WATER
THIS IS LIKE FIRST GRADE STUFF
even if it was fire and water it'd make water vapor
fire and water vapor would do nothing because water vapor is already gaseous

Yes, yes, I  was also thinking about this too. Sonic isn't consistent with it's gameplay styles, they keep switching it up all the time. There's nothing wrong with new mechanics, but the core gameplay should still be there. The only Sonic game I liked that used some sort of main gimmick was Sonic Colors, I liked the way wisps were used to traverse through the levels.

Sonic team should stick to what worked the best instead of switching gameplay styles all the time.
