I am pretty sure I understand how Sonic should work in a platformer more than Sega itself.  And I never played a Sonic game before.

99% sure that sega aims towards kids now more than adults, if the commercial is flashy and neat then kids will want it.

Sega exists to pump out cheap bad-mediocre games for the Western market that sell well and provide IP that Sammy can use on it's pachinko and gambling machines in Asia, which is where the real money is for the company.

I think the only legit Sega game is the Yakuza series.  Even that zombie spinoff goes miles ahead of every modern Sonic game.
