Author Topic: I got a PSU for $28  (Read 829 times)

RadioShack near me was closing down so everything in the store was 30-70% off.
So, I got a $58 PSU for $28. Good steal, I thought.
It's a thermaltake TR2 500W
good or bad?

bronze 80+ or anything like that?
usually PSUs with that are pretty fine from a trusted brand.

boo

basically that PSU is meh. I certainly wouldnt use it unless you plan to do a really dirt cheap build.

from the few reviews i've read on newegg, it tends to die pretty quickly

That thing is going to die in a loving month, lmao

gg no re setro, wasted a good 28 bucks
coulda bought 1 $28 hooker or 28 $1 hookers with that money...

ThermaleTake is a good brand, just never buy a cheap unknown brand PSU, ones built in China with no oversight often fake regulation stamps and could be potential fire hazards or overload your motherboard. In those cases it's better to spend an extra $50 for a well known brand than to jeopardize several hundred dollars worth of electronics in your computer or potentially a house fire.

tfw most PSU's arent even more than 60 dosh

Yeah thermaltake is great. You got a good deal.

I've spent a good deal on power supplies, getting a high enough wattage power supply with modular cables and a silent fan can be easily $100+

I had that PSU and its loving garbage, got it for $20 the 600watt variant and the coil whine was real
Also there was burn marks when I got rid of it

The feeling is worse then you spend like $90+ on a high end one and get ridiculous coil whine anyways. Luckily a lot of companies will accept an RMA for coil whine on PSUs.
