United States has the highest death rate by firearms in the first world and I swear it's because things this are allowed.
The problem is the culture, not the availability. In general we aren't as phased by violence as Europeans are for example. We got movies and songs glorify the gangsta life style by poppin pills and doing drivebys in the hood with your hommies. Even things like movies and games are can be really violent and they too have come under public scrutiny. Doom was heavily bashed because the Columbine shooters played it and made levels possibly based on their school, the Virginia Tech shooter played a lot of counter strike and that game was bashed by the media. People are quick to blame something.
Personally I think the problem is rooted in the persons mind. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of countries in the EU actually let you own guns. France and Germany have some of the highest ownership rights in the EU. The Czech republic lets you open carry. Even the countries like Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland let you own guns. Yet very rarely we hear about something bad happen.
Also if you think these are problem

You are dead wrong, pistols are actually the problem

Also look at California, lots of laws and regulations on fire arms here. Yet we have more gun deaths than some of the more gun tolerant states. Heck a lot of people were punches kicked and stabbed death.
also single victims out number multiple victim homicides

We can't blame guns alone. Also the people you expect to control guns like the police are actually pretty pro 2nd amendment. My college major is criminal justice, my professors all retired police, and I too am pro second amendment. There are lot of people out there who shouldn't have guns, and there are also morons who aren't helping the second amendment by open carrying in public. That guy in the airport is one of them.
