Every male at age 18 has to register for selective service. It's just a database of names to keep track of who is eligible for military service should the need for a draft come up. You have to fill within 30 days of turning 18 and should really complete it if you want to work for the government, receive financial aid, and student loans.

yes, though for now he's just registering for it.

when drafting actually does begin you sorta do get pulled into the military whether you like it or not.

The best part about America is that they have so many volunteers for the military that they will never need the draft again.

got a letter like this a few months ago, but they immediately said in the same letter that this kind of thing doesn't ever happen in the netherlands anymore and that i should disregard the entire letter.

so basically it was just "if war breaks out, you're going there. jk lol"

It's still a legal obligation for males between 18 and 25 to be registered for the draft, if the need for it comes. It won't. That doesn't free you of your obligation, and selective service will still prosecute you for refusing to sign up for selective service. They will keep harassing you, send you emails, mail, threats in the mail, and show up at your doorstep. If you still refuse to sign up, they'll prosecute you for a felony.

Usually when you register to vote there's a separate section on the forms to sign up for selective service. I did mine separately so I didn't have to fill in that part, but I remember it being there.
