Looking to get a PC gaming controller

I highly recommend this Logitech controller or any Logitech controller in existence as long as its not highly expensive. Logitech have the best controllers in stock and when you play with them its has a really good grip than any other controller. It has that PS2 controller feel which is why I use Logitech controllers, the xbox controller is ok but I don't think it beast a Logitech controller

The Steam controller is almost certainly still terrible, I would wait for people to have actually used it before preparing to invest in it at all.

it has to go through the tablet or the console thing which is really lame - I don't see why they just enable it for use on PC

Xb360 controller is the best because it was made for actual human hands

but for driving, a wheel and pedal is loving awesome

I guess if he's focused on driving games an Xbone controller would be best? I mean, I've never had issues with a PS4 controller, but I think they're more expensive. I normally just recommend PS4 controllers because their d-pads aren't trash.

Well I was gonna link a wireless 360 controller receiver but it's not compatible with windows 8 so nevermind

well, you can wait on the steam controller if you're willing to pay $60 for that.
alternatively, you can get a rock candy xbox 360 or ps3 controller for around 15 or 20 dollars. i believe they have xbone and ps4 controllers as well, but they cost more. the rock candy controllers are transparent and have no rumble motors, so if you're cool with that, it's worth the price. i have a 360 controller, and it works great.
oh, it also has the stuffty 360 d-pad, and i don't know if it's interchangeable. it can also have a funky setup procedure. it's possible that windows won't recognize it as a controller, but there's a simple fix that you can google.

If you have a Xbox 360 already, just get a wireless adapter (works same as wired but cheaper) if you have a PS3 controller, I believe there's some programs out there that can make them compatible with the PC.

I'd reccomend a Logitech G27 if you're looking to play racing games.

w8 or pre buy a steam controller whenever thats a thing to do
other than that xbox controllers are fine, i use one
