lmao what a joke find a good article

people are always talking about "oh man what if we encounter life that will destroy us"

but even more embarrassing - what if we're just late to the party and there's already a huge alien federation, and when we come and say "we're finally here" they don't give a stuff.

It'll be like space triangle trade, get a bunch of new diseases that we have never beened exposed to and have most of our population die out while things that we consider minor like the cold could also be devastating to them.

This will end badly.

Aka a movie.

100 million is quite a bit. This could easily spawn some dishonest attempts, and ruin astronomical science for a long time. Why not just have people do it because they're passionate about it?

100 million dollars can go a long way to feeding people that don't have food. a 100 million dollars can go a long way to rebuild america's crumbling infrastructure. why do we give a forget if there is extraterrestrial life or not? there's a pretty good chance there isn't, and it'll be a waste of good money.

$100 million dollars spent towards solving humanity's greatest mystery is absolutely nothing compared to what we spend on building a single fighter jet. Looking at the big picture, this is a steal.

Plus, if you can't justify to yourself why finding extraterrestrial life is important, then you shouldn't be talking about science to begin with.

Why not just have people do it because they're passionate about it?
Science is loving expensive. 'Passion' is great, but whoring one's self out for money is also important. It's a necessary evil.

I know. But why not give people funding-specific money, rather than just an absurd cash prize? You could give so many potential astronomers a heads-up with that kinda cash. Even little stuff would be great, like giving a nice personal telescope to all those kids who like to just look at the sky.

You're a handicap

I'm not sure exactly what 'funding-specific money' entails, but you can rest assured that the money isn't just being thrown into the hands of scientists. There will probably be some kind of board that will determine how the funding gets distributed.

The money is getting put towards paying people to stay on the job, buying computers to brown townyze data found by dishes and will effectively make people be able to see 10x more area of the sky, brown townyze that area better and be able to record more data from it.
