yeah kinda funny how you have to learn the life skill.
by the way, if you type skills there should be something that has (Focus) next to it. That means that skill will get more exp than your other skills. If you want to change your focused skill, just talk to the npc who gave it and you can pay them to refocus it

edit: yay i reached lvl 8 life
i still don't feel like i have enough life to survive dealing with thieves
i'm paranoid as hell after one hit me for a whopping 8 damage and killed me
