another thing to consider is a parent's view on this; would they be OK with the school taking a student's cell phone if caught texting in class, because it forces them to pay attention?

A sensible one will, if you like a disrespectful twat in class and pay attention to your phone and not the teacher what do you expect.

I never understood why people brought phones to school ever since Middle School and now during High School

Some kids have parents that go to work, and their parents want them to keep in touch after school to make sure the kid isn't screwing around.

In my opinion, kids should be fully able to have phones, but not in class. In an assembly, it's totally okay (in my opinion) but in class you need to listen and work.

Teachers shouldn't be able to confiscate phones, either. Kids don't usually have a PIN to their phone and teachers can do bad things to their phones, or lose them themselves.

what are they gonna do look at your research lol

besides, it's usually females that get them taken and they like...always have passwords lol

or lose them themselves.
lot's of teachers have designated drawers for phones tho

If I were a parent, I would be okay with it as long as my kid brought his/her phone home after school. Schools shouldn't hold phones beyond the end of a school day, but they should be able to either for a class period or for the remainder of a day.

can't even have phones out during class because they're a distraction to us all apparently

but the actual distraction is between the teacher and the student, which wastes class time instead of the student just being distracted

makes no sense

if they're using it during a lesson or whatever when they're supposed to be doing something then it's justifiable. if it during freetime or its one of those communist schools that just doesn't allow phones for some reason then it's pretty stupid, but I guess you knew the rules so it's still your fault for bringing it.

what really bothers me are the more arbitrary rules some schools have, like mandatory hall passes to go to the bathroom (which is btw really gross. they get kinda smelly pretty fast) or no sports hats (seriously, what even).

Then don't use it during class. Don't be blatantly disrespectful. I think if you willfully disobey the rules, then you forfeit the right to have a phone in class.
i never forfeit the right to own my property

how bout your parents or the police
why would they

sport hats is because of gangs, but hall passes are just ridiculous

If you're not respecting the teacher with your attention they shouldn't have to respect your property.

who could ever forget the Dodgers Takeover of '99?      the school system was never the same afterwards....

I'm all for phones if the student is able to use it for constructive purposes, i.e. using it as a calculator and or looking up resources. IMO the student should be able to bring in a PC of some sort that allows quick work to be made along with granting the teacher an easier way to monitor what the student is doing.

tl;dr You should be able to use your phone as a constructive tool at the appropriate tines, not as a time waster.
