I'm all for phones if the student is able to use it for constructive purposes, i.e. using it as a calculator and or looking up resources. IMO the student should be able to bring in a laptop of some sort, this allows quick work to be made and allows the teacher an easier way to monitor what the student is doing.

tl;dr You should be able to use your phone as a constructive tool, not as a time waster.

This is fine, at my school it's allowed and it's the students fault if they're falling behind.

during lessons our teachers will take them away but during work periods we are able to work with them.

it's the students fault if they're falling behind.

at my school it's just that "the work's too hard for the kid, they need to be given easier work"

Another thing to consider: if the school's code of conduct say that cell phones can be taken if used in class, and your parent signs it, then is it not your choice to give your property over to the teacher, but your parent's choice?

I'm all for phones if the student is able to use it for constructive purposes, i.e. using it as a calculator and or looking up resources. IMO the student should be able to bring in a PC of some sort that allows quick work to be made along with granting the teacher an easier way to monitor what the student is doing.

/agree, my history teacher lets us use them for research, especially since we have limited text books

I feel like once you are in high school, kids should be responsible for their own devices and how they want to use it as long as it doesn't bother anyone else. If the kid wants to fail his classes to play on their phone let them.

The reason I have this view is because most of my classes allow our phones to be used in class, I personally find it easier to concentrate on my work when listening to music so I don't have to hear other people doing whatever. Plus, i'll go on my phone and text during most times in class since i'm usually ahead or work on my own. I don't know, might be somewhat of an unpopular opinion but that's my view on it.

Also a side note: My high school is very tech oriented, most of our classes require use of the interwebs, we got school issued MacBook Airs, so that's another reason we get to use our phones a lot.

For my Freshman year, I was able to bring in my iPod during class and use it as I see fit as long as Im getting work done while doing so. Hell, for my Psychology final, I was able to bring in my laptop to complete it.
For my sophomore year, I was allowed to use my laptop to complete all of the years schoolwork.

Of course, this was because I only went to a special 2 hour afterschool event where I do all my schooling,  and I get alot done in 2 hours than I do an entire 8 hour day.

On topic though, I really dont suggest you bring in your phone unless you are prepared to be relinquish your rights to own it for the day

wow

what i don't get is if the teacher is so adamant about cellphones in class why don't they take them at the beginning?

we're allowed to use them for work purposes at our school except in physics and maths, it's looked down upon because you really should be bringing a scientific calculator for those subjects and get used to that because you aren't allowed phones in an exam

If the student is using a phone in class then take it.
But if the student is using it in a brake then forget off and stop taking it because its brake time no one is learning anything

we got school issued MacBook Airs, so that's another reason we get to use our phones a lot.

maybe if you had a PC you wouldnt have that prob
