Really the only thing that seems to be constantly stopping anything escalating to another world war is mutually assured destruction; I think it'll probably happen as soon as there's a few world leaders who just either don't have the foresight to realize they'd be responsible for glassing half the planet, or care about it.

also this ^ is currently the most likely thing to spark a 3rd world war. WW1 was started by political aggression (austria hungary), ww2 was started by philosophical aggression (national socialistsm, fascism and japanese feudo-imperialism) and ww3 will almost definitely be started by religious aggression (radical islam). There's also the possibility that russia could go crazy and start attacking but I personally feel it's unlikely.
