That's their "health" status.
Ostiarius fires his machine machine gun at two of soldier bugs. They were cut down within seconds and killed instantly. Omars burst shot penetrated the armor of the last soldier bug and wounded it. Algernon's burst of fire killed a Hatchling instantly, it's body exploding instantly from the impact of caseless slug.

With 14 kills so far you can see the bugs getting closer. You haven't really see a bug in person this close, just blurry footage and photos of dead ones. However you can hear the clicking chirping as they approach.
Drone 3 returns to squad 3.

Squad 4 gets into fire position as Master Sargent Batsaikhan gives nod to some private to fire his rocket. Your squad lays down a spray of bullet and rockets which wipes out anything left inside the hex. A cloud of dust and bug remains lies in front of you.

Squads 3's drone came back intact with 50% battery life remaining.

Squad 1 and 2 have almost finished off the enemy bugs. Forcing one squad to retreat.
After second barrage followed by a hail of gunfire one squad of bugs was turned to swiss cheese while the other forced to retreat due to damage inflicted. However two more squads have converged onto their location
[MAJ Owens]: Good work platoon. The enemy is in shock and disorganized. The mortars are almost done assisting Platoon 1 a grid a way and will be available for you shortly.
