Lore wise it's simply cheaper to produce a small light weight disposable drone whose operators might not even live to see the next day.

RP wise its more of a balance measure and to maintain some form of difficulty.

[Maj. Owens]: Lieutenant, the mortar teams are trying to ration ammo and keep the tubes cool enough. I'm trying to patch through to regimental command and get us some heavier support. The navy is unable to help us in this situation. Any further bombardment in that sector and we loose several what's left of the objectives and your platoon.

Update

Squads move into place. Aliens in E11 have taken notice of C12 and have alerted their comrades.

Squad 1 has been spotted and has been engaged by two squads. Aliens begin to climb on the mountain.

[MAJ Owens]: Platoon 2 command come in over.

Hadrian draws his rifle and gets into cover.

"Platoon 2 HQ here,"

In your hex there are several large boulders to take cover behind while giving you a good view of the upward slope.

[Maj. Owens]: Copy, Mortars are back online platoon lead. Division Command has authorized has also authorized rocket artillery to be fired in your sector in your sector, they have enough for one salvo So make it count.

The one marked HQ which is the Platoon leaders squad. Owens is in a command center outside the map somewhere.

"Squad 1, take your drone up and move it to O7, if you still have a drone,"

"Copy HQ, I'll send the fire mission over in a few moments. Out,"
