Author Topic: How Much Need for Server Space?  (Read 837 times)

curious how much of a market there is for renting out server space
friend has a company with tons of excess storage and processing power currently

Are they renting out physical servers, or VPSes or what

"anything they went
physical, virtual machine (fully virtual) or VPS (like, private allocation and shell, shared kernel)
only difference between VM and VPS is that one is fully virtualized and you can build a custom kernel. all hardware is paravirtualized"

if they can beat 512MB of ram, 1 CPU core, 20GB SSD storage for $5/month, i'll consider

what's the company?

www.ionfish.org

mostly works though word of mouth, website doesn't really say much
would be good for the east coast, since he has servers at Penn now (was in texas), and we're going to be at Drexel (literally right next to Penn)

edit: "how does a free 2-week trial sound?"
he's big into giving people a 2 week free trial
and he says $8/month for those specs
for a BL server, wouldn't it be more like 5 GB storage at most?

doesnt say much? it says nothing at all about the products they offer

that just strikes me as dodgy tbh

yeah that's pretty fishy

like I said, mostly word of mouth and over the phone

now he's talking to me about nitpicky over dollar amounts lol
"I've dealt with my fair share
$200 vs $205/month, in one case"

but yeah, he's reliable and I've been hosting a MC server for about half a year on one of his spare machines with 0 downtime and 0 issues
which surprised me a ton, since in the past for a MC server I was running for a friend, there were so many issues with their servers getting moved and what not

edit: just checked my BL folders
my current one for coding is pretty slimmed down to mostly defaults, and is under 1 GB
but my old folder which is bloated with almost every addon in existence and about 4k screenshots, is only 13.7 GB
20 GB seems like a bit much

nah i'm out, digitalocean has him beat
i wouldn't specifically use it just for BL either

ah, ok

and one of his past things is www.compilejava.net
which I find pretty impressive and useful
and it's used a ton currently

How many people could a server with those specs support anyway?

do you recommend digitalocean?

i wasn't able to test it for long as I hosted BL on it during the DDoS scare whenever ago (hosted for a day, bunch of top servers were DDoS'd the next), but it seemed to run fine with 16 players (preeetty sure it could support more)
i'd recommend setting up ~2GB of swap on it though

i would recommend it, yeah

digitalocean looks neat, but not sure how reliable they are

their whole thing about droplets also looks interesting

I'll consider if 1gb ram
