At the ripe old age of 70, the glorious leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, retires from office as General Secretary of the USSR. It is a sad day for the nation, but we must move on to a new era. An era of change, an era of increasing freedom and glory, is on the horizon. A new man takes the position of General Secretary - Nikita Khrushchev.
PoliticsOne of the two world superpowers (rivalling the United States), the Soviet Union is the largest country on the planet and leader of the communist world. It is a major influence in Eastern Europe and Asia. Internally, the Soviet Union is composed of a number of Soviet Socialist Republics (SSRs), the major one being the Russian SFSR; it is a single-party state, headed the the Communist Party. Stalin, who recently retired and is on his deathbed, led the country into a cult of personality and repressed personal freedoms; however, Khrushchev plans on counteracting some of these features of the Soviet government. In addition, the USSR is tied to a series of 5-year plans representing the state's planned feature for the next, well, 5 years.
