Author Topic: starting a blog, need cheap hosting  (Read 1198 times)

i'm starting up a blog that talks about anything regarding politics, music and after that i take requests and opinions to be discussed. the only issue is i don't know where to begin; i did rent a vps but it kept getting packet stormed and it was just too much work setting up even joomla or drupal. so now i'm going to need web hosting. my only question is, where do i find a cheap and half decent host for under 4/mo. i have a tight budget (as you can see), and i don't plan to have a lot of visitors, so i need a plan that'll work for me.

tumblr does all that.

it isn't that bad if you avoid the obvious sjw blogs

i've used tumblr in the past, and it really does not satisfy my concerns. plus, i don't like the subdomain. i might as well go with bluehost, but i'll still leave this open.

EDIT: wow i'm stupid lol. due to court concerns about my internet usage i cannot host a website (by renting it), so i might as well stick with tumblr for now.

Renting a VPS shouldn't use up your own internet resources. If you want cheap hosting off your own VPS, learning how to use any sort of linux distro would be beneficial, because linux VPSes are insanely cheap.

Because each operating system made by windows or apple are copyrighted, buying a VPS comes with a license fee. What would be $9/mo for a debian server might end up being $17/mo for a windows 2003 server.

For a low visitor blog, he doesn't need a vps with OS access and all that, just a premade webserver with ftp and control panel access. Cheaper too, when he has a tight budget

I'll let you use my server for two bucks a month.

I suggest 000Webhost -- it's free, allows you to fully customize html, php, and MySQL databases. I currently use this to host updates for Trust List Manager, so I do recommend it.

Blogspot?
It's free, isn't it?

Why not just use Blogger?

yeah there's like tons of options for this that don't require you to have your own server. why would you prefer to get your own, cheap, probably bad hosting, to a large company's infrastructure? when all you're going to be doing is blogging
nobody's mentioned wordpress yet so there's another

http://ovh.com is pretty decent for webhosting
the vps stuff they have is really cheap but it should definitely handle what you're doing

the downside is that the vps takes a while to set up and is denfiitally a learning curve if you don't know how to set one up already
